As a meal, treat or reward, we would stop at one of the many Vienna stands around Chicago to enjoy a mouth-watering hot dog. I live in Florida now and found the Chicago Grill that serves Vienna "Chicago Dogs." Even now, the taste of one takes me back to my home state where I enjoyed Chicago's tastiest gift.

However the BEST hot dogs by far is a brand out of Wisconsin called Cher-Make. They make GREAT natural casing hot dogs, beef hot dogs, Cheddi Links(great smoked hot dog with real Wisconsin cheddar)and more. need I go on. If you haven't tried them you need to.

Zweigle's natural casing Texas and particularly Pork (white) hots, along with the Hofmanns Snappy Grillers (Syracuse, NY) are the best I've had. And I'm comparing these against most of your Top 20, and many of the others mentioned in comments and not in the Top 20. We definitely live in an area known for hot dogs, especially Porkers, aka White Hots. Try them...you'll love 'em.

Our family sticks with Boar's Head franks and deli meats. This way we know what we are eating and Boar's Head has never let us down yet. I value my family's health too much to give them anything less... plus their meats taste terrific!!!

As for the midwest hot dogs, they all lack quality and taste in my opinion.Believe me, I live in Michigan and the hot dogs and food in general are lousy.
