America's Most Hated Foods

A while, back, I wrote a post on emotionally-based food aversions -- both my own (tuna noodle casserole), and those of loved ones (scrambled eggs, mayonnaise, garlic). Little did I know this was going to open up Pandora's icebox. More than 75,000 people weighed in on our "What food hits your yuck button?" poll, and the comments thread is at the time of this writing, 1668 strong and counting. It seems that folks have just been looking for a place to spill their long-stewing food loathings, so we've counted down the top 20, weighting them for poll votes, number of mentions in comments, and level of vitriol incurred.

Well I can take or leave Okra and sour cream, but the others are great. America, you and I would not get in each others way in a grocery store. Eighteen of those twenty "Most hated" foods are down right delicious when properly prepared. Maybe its the cook and not the food.

My bottom four are on your list:

#4 - Mayonnaise.
#3 - Egg whites - never been able to stomach them.
#2 - Liver, at least beef liver. I can eat chicken liver.
#1 - Undoubtedly BEETS! I won't allow them in my house!

My wife spent some time in Russia and loves borscht.
Sorry dear :-)

The other two, Okra and sour cream are ok when combined with other foods. What do these people eat? Candy bars, ice cream, hot dogs and hamburgers would explain why Americas is overweight. It appears that many people have a terrible lack of good taste; and I do mean, Good Taste.

A lot of the comments sound like they're coming from some child who managed to turn on a parent's computer. Foods you hate? Gee folks, grow up and get a life.

YUCK!, but they must be the pickled beets variety sold in cans, etc. Fresh beets are delicious. These people are all food-o-phobes. I suspect that they have long been the victims of really poor cooking experiences and a total and complete lack of four and five star restaurants... not to mention worldiness, closed-mindedness and a total and complete lack of adventure. How about goat stew, raw octopuss, caviar or tempura fried sweet shrimp heads. These are all things I've enjoyed (among hundreds of others) and only the goat stew was difficult to "swallow". They're lame just like most Americans.

I can't stand the sight of it, the sound of the spoon shlurping into it. If I ever swallowed poison, I wouldn't need an emetic -- just force me to eat some cottage cheese. Oatmeal comes in at a close second.

Obviously, folks, no one made you sit in front of a cold bowl of OATMEAL 'til you ate it . . . or served PARSNIPS or RUTABEGA. You didn't have a mom who liked SEA SCALLOPS or (horror of horrors) EGGPLANT. You didn't marry into a family that liked thick gloppy MILK GRAVY - over (gaaak) biscuits. Next to those things, most of the list sounds like individual little "food snits". Bon apetit!

My addition to the list is Sauerkraut. Stuff should be illegal.

I also despise seafood, most leafy green veggies, and tomatoes. Yes, I'm a picky eater, but aren't we all picky about something? I've read about "super tasters" and I think I'm one of them. My palette is growing to accomodate more tastes than before but I don't see how I'll ever learn to like mayonaise. Those people who are putting down picky eaters by telling them to "grow up" should stop being so judgmental. I'm sure they have their own preferences and should keep their noses out of the air!

Put the blame on the relatives and their Nazi tactics. I savor all the mentioned items. But, the adverse psychology is NOT present to cloud my judgement.
The whole article is biased against good foods. I have aversions to some foods also. But, I can acknowledge the truth. We were poor. Dirt poor southern Textile folks. So, I don't eat the things that we ate a lot. because it was all we had. But, I don't blame the "green beans and little white taters". Or, the "polk salad" and "turnip greens" that we picked from the edge of the road after church on Sunday. When was the last time you shopped for groceries on the shoulder of a road? Ever had a baked "possum" that your grandfather ran over with the car. Be Thankful for what you have.
Yes!!! I'm pissed about the whole article. One of these days you may be hungry. As are three million homeless in this "AMERICA the LAND of PLENTY" One of every one hundred people in America have no place to sleep tonight.

The only veggie I don't like is Okra, although I'll eat it breaded and fried; most of the time, I don't eat eggs, although I do sometimes crave them and will eat them; Mayo is nasty and reminds me of pus( and when combined with ketchup on a burger, looks like a horrible infection), but it's the actual smell and taste that's the nastiest for me; I HATE liver because my Joan Crawford-like mother forced us to eat that nasty filth; I eat pretty much everything else. I LOVE ALL seafood, red meats, (except organ meats-YUK!)and poultry. Everything in moderation, and that is why I am a thin 146 lbs at 5'9". I will never understand people who refuse to eat veggies and berries; this is why America is a nation full of fat, diseased people. Eat you fruits and vegetables!
