Tuesday Happy Hour: Hard Root Beer

root beer cap Though I drank a lot of root beer years ago, these days all of my soda needs are taken up by Diet Coke and Pepsi (yes, I have someone learned to love both of them). But icy cold root beer can hit the spot on a warm day. I have to admit I've never had it with alcohol involved.

But AOL Food has the recipe (from DrinksTV) for Hard Root Beer, which is basically 8 ounces of root beer and 2 ounces of spiced rum. Pretty simple and delicious-sounding (unless, of course, you don't like root beer and/or rum, I guess). Some people, however, think the amount of rum should be kicked up a notch. This one calls for some experimentation.

Three Olives brand vodka just came out with a root beer flavored vodka. I bet that would be good with straight root beer, too. Oh, and some vanilla ice cream while you're at it.

I've had hard root beer before. It was decent, very high on the sweet side (not sure if it was the root beer or what) for my tastes.

Ooooh, and watch out for the sweetness of the soda and Capt. Morgan's---they can hide the taste of the rum. You'll be on your keister in no time.

I'm sticking with my Diet A&W Root Beer without alcohol. My doctors would keelhaul me if they caught me drinking anything with rum in it.

You taste test it and let us know here how it is, ok? I'll live vicariously through your taste buds. :)

Traditional root beer is brewed a lot like beer and has alcohol in it. The yeast helps make it bubbly. It is really good without having to resort to dumping liquor in it.

Try it with some Southern Comfort, I couldn't tell you the correct proportions, more of a mix to taste version. It has been a while, but I think A&W worked the best.
