I was one of those lucky kids who grew up eating a variety of foods. My grandmother Bunny was an adventurous cook, I had a Japanese aunt who introduced sushi to family dinners when I was four years old and my parents were big fans of taking us to eat at Asian restaurants. By the time I was 11 years old, I was quite familiar with the offerings at our local Vietnamese restaurant and Portland-style bento was a weekly meal choice.
The one thing we never ordered when we went out to eat at Yen Ha were those sticky, sweet, charred ribs. My mom didn't eat pork, so they were off limits, but I'd watch the other diners dig in to their dishes with relish and I'd wish that I could have a bite.
This picture, of these gorgeous, Vietnamese-style barbecued ribs, takes me right back to those dinners out when I was a kid. I think I know what I'm having for dinner tonight. Thanks to Josh Bousel for adding this pic to the Slashfood Flickr pool!
