
That's the focus of one of the latest polls from What Japan Thinks. Sure, the poll asks about scary Japanese food, but there must be lots of food out there that seems weird that you'd like to try anyway.
My favorite from the list was the sweet green tea and adzuki bean spaghetti (pictured above), but there's lots more where that came from. The only American food I can think of that seems scary that I'd like to try is one of those burgers with donuts for buns, or something like that. so, what kind of scary foods do you want to try?

Two weeks ago on the travel channel with Andrew Zimmern he went to a place that is known for it's; "peanut Butter and Mayonnaise Hamburgers". They put the hamburg on the griddle, when it was just about done they put a half a cup of peanut butter on it and about a quarter cup of mayo. They covered it so it would melt a little, then served it on a bun with some pickle. Andrew Zimmern said he loved it and would definitely have it again.

5-27-2008 @7:50PM Monty Harris said... I think the liver and onions that my Mother made every once in a blue was the most memorable thing I remember being served. This remains the only thing I actively avoid even though I love liverwurst. I will try liver once in a while to see if I have ever grown out of it. I'm starting think the trauma was too much to overcome.

5-28-2008 @10:40AM Gobo said... I've had cuitlacoche (aka 'corn mushroom') at authentic taquerias, and it's really interesting stuff... a slight smokiness to it. The texture is sort of slimy, though. Not your average taco filling.
A taqueria down the street from me has grasshopper enchiladas, and I'm fascinated.

Balut I have tried 3 times now, and I cannot get around it, Uni, I have had a handful of times, from dives, and from top notch SF sushi-ya's they all taste like tidepool that has been in the sun all day.
If ever in Japan, I shall try it numerous times, I am sure.
But other than Balut, and perhaps live grubs, I am game for anything.
Well with enough local booze, I am sure I would suck down a handful of grubs, larvae or squirming insects if offered to me.

5-29-2008 @7:23AM Gobo said... Alex: I've tried uni at sushi-yas stateside and in Tokyo, and it's still just grey jelly that tastes of low tide. Combine that with the knowledge that you're eating genitals and it's a foodstuff I'm pretty much done with.
Same with natto. Tried it three times. Japanese people stared at me and said, "You American? You eat that?", so I think they knew how bitter and ugly the stuff tastes.
