Yes, I hate bbq, summer, and Memorial Day. I'm a terrible person.
Of course, I don't hate Memorial Day itself, what it represents, I hate that it signals the start of summer, my least favorite season. I hate summer the way Lost fans hated Nikki and Paolo (yes, everything I do comes back to television). Maybe even more.
Here are the 8 reasons I hate about Memorial Day and summer in general.
1. The heat and humidity. This has nothing to do with food, but God I hate it.
2. Barbecues. I'm just not a bbq guy. It's not that I don't like chicken or hot dogs or burgers (though I rarely eat burgers nowadays), I just hate the whole ritual of barbecuing. Oh, and did I tell you it's done outside where it's hot and humid (see #1)? For the record, I don't like parades, fireworks, or the beach either (yes, I know, you're just clamoring to invite me to your next party, eh?).
3. All the beer drinking. Hey, I like beer! But you ever notice that summer brings out the drunk jerks more than the fall and winter? Just an observation.
I also don't like the fact that the drunks that pass by my neighborhood on a hot summer night think it's necessary to leave their beer bottles and cans on my front stairs.
4. I can't drink hot tea in the summer. Of course, I can drink it if I want to. There are no laws on the books that say I can't. But it's usually just too hot for me to drink hot tea, one of my favorite things to do in the world. I think it's a myth that drinking hot liquids on hot days cools your body (though I guess getting to drink iced tea is a plus within a minus).
5. My favorite foods are fall/winter foods. Besides the hot tea, I like bowls of hot soup and hearty plates of pasta and bowls of turkey chili. The summer just makes you want to eat lighter and not turn the oven on because it's too hot. Blah.
6. There's only so much salad I can take. I know, salads aren't just a summer food, but it's the season I find myself eating them the most. And I can only take so much salad every week, even if I do use a different salad dressing each time.
7. More bugs in the summer. And they always seem to want to crawl near or fly around my food.
8. The heat and humidity. Did I mention these already?
Labor Day can't come soon enough for me. There must be other people like me out there?

I'M like you!!!!!!! Don't drink beer, or particularly like hot tea but I REALLY HATE summer ... with the heat of a nova. I start getting depressed in March and when the temp rises above 65 I know it's the beginning of the end. The day the weatherman says, "We're FINALLY in for some warm weather!" I'm ready to move to Norway.

I do miss my soups and stews though...

It said something about how during the summer, it was believed that people weren't usually as hungry as in autumn (when appetites started to wake up) and so they paid special attention to autumn food...I guess they do have a point, at least in my case X3

besides, BBQ with a nice frosty one on a patio with friends is maybe one of the greatest things you experience as a person. that is, unless you're always so full of hate.

However, i can't grill where i live, because someone almost set the whole townhouse complex on fire and ruined it for everyone, and even though i have a grill pan, it smokes up my house too much. i've been searching for inspiration of what to make for a nice dinner for my hubs and i tonight, and can't find a gosh darn recipe that doesn't require a grill.

BBQ is a way to cook meat and done over smoke for a long time; sometimes there is a spice rub and or a sauce. Grilling is cooking almost anything from meat to veggies to fruit over (generally) high heat over a short time.
And that's MY pet peve about the summer: people who think BBQ'ing and grilling are the same thing. If you invite people over and cook large hunks of cow or pig for a few hours, that could be a BBQ. If you're inviting them over to quickly cook hamburgers/hot dogs/chicken breasts, you're having a cookout.

"Barbecuing" is the act of cooking pork or beef slowly over low heat, usually over hickory wood. There might be a dry spice rub, or there might not. There might be sauce - vinegar and peppers, the way God intended, or that nasty "brown ketchup" that they use out west... or there might not.
"Grilling" is the act of cooking burgers or hot dogs on a grill.
Any jackass can grill something. Only a wise few can barbecue. Don't confuse the two.

He was from Turkey, and he swore up and down that the best way to cool off in hot weather was to drink hot tea. It raises your body temperature, he would say, it makes you sweat, et voila... you feel cooler.
I have no idea if this actually works or not, or is just a case of feeling cooler as opposed to being cooler, but I will have a cup of hot tea on a hot summer day... just in case. ;)

In Canada, grilling is commonly referred to as "barbecuing" and the propane/charcoal grill itself is commonly called a "barbecue." I imagine it's similar in the northern states.

Don't move to Norway, move to Seattle. I'm becoming convinced, after living here for four months, that winter is the only season this place has. There was too much snow to go hiking yesterday.

If you don't want salad, don't eat it! You write over and over that summer "makes" you want to do something that you hate. Are you actually talking about social pressure to do things like eat salad in the summer? I'm guessing that's what the real problem is, that you feel like these are the things you're supposed to like, so you do them even though you don't like them. I hope you'll stick to your guns (and do your cooking at night when it isn't too hot).
Personally, I have mixed feelings about the summer. I love the sunshine, love the fresh produce, but hate the heat (I like in the desert of eastern Washington, and it gets plenty hot here). Luckily, we have very low humidity here; if you live in a humid place, I definitely feel for you.

People are entitled to their opinions and just because you don't agree with them doesn't make them wrong. It's getting to the point today where people aren't even permitted to hate something and personally I hate it so sue me.

That said, I like drinking hot tea or coffee in the summer. It makes me sweat which is ultimately cooling. Now, drinking alcohol in the summer is the problem. That will totally heat you up, even if your drinking cold beer. Alcohol expands your blood vessels. Definitely more of a cold weather endeavor. (IMHO, clearly lot's of people like their summer brews.)
