Baltimore Sun columnist checks out gas station fare

With gas prices rising, travelers are doing what they can to reduce their costs elsewhere as they journey to the vacation destinations. One way to cut costs is to buy your meals at the same place you fuel your car, at the service station. John Lindner of the Baltimore Sun, noticing that gas stations were starting to offer more elevated fare, has conducted an unscientific study of gas station dining.

Using a five tire ranking system (one tire is the lowest and five is the best), he and his wife noshed at five stations in the Baltimore region. Their approach was to eat a hot dog at each location (as a control) and additionally have one of whatever the station's "signature" dish was. They ate at High's, Wawa (although they should have had a hoagie, not the salad), Royal Farms, BP and the Sunshine General Store at a local Chevron station. Overall, they were pleased with the offerings, with Sunshine garnering a solid 4 1/2 tires for their bacon cheeseburger and hot dog.

Personally, I'm particularly partial to Wawa (even though they recently closed the one a block from my apartment). What are your favorite service station eats?

And if you want to pay more, their selection of subs, wraps, bar-be-qued pork, sandwiches and salads is without equal. Too bad they are only in the middle Atlantic area...

With a full blown deli and different kinds of hot food, sandwiches, salads, and drinks, that place is hard to leave! Whenever I'm in June Lake, also nearby, I make a special trip there for the food itself, and so do lots of others!

When I lived up north I always got the Italian hoagies at the Wawa and you could not beat them even the local deli which was ran by an Italian was not as good..the meats and cheese were fresh and so were the veg's. The price was lower than the deli also When I go home where do I go to get a good hoagie ? The Wawa. Don't have to search..

The only owned by the local supermarket chain, so not only do you save 10 cents per gallon on every $50 you spend @ the supermarket or gas station, but they also have great food, such as Nathan Hot Dogs and even Paninis and other gourmet foods. I love Sheetz @ 3am like the rest of us, but Get Go blows them away!

You can get things there that aren't anywhere else--like honey covered Bugels. They are a great alternative to a candy bar. LONG LIVE TOWN AND COUNTRY

GAS STATIONS R GROSS

5-27-2008 @12:20PM GAS STATIONS R GROSS said... Gas stations are gross. My buddy works at one and they get their breakfast items like dougnuts at midnight and they sit there for hours. The hot dog turners never get cleaned and the packaged sandwhiches only get thrown away after 3 days past the expiration. Yall are sick for eating at gas stations.

The person who is working their is either from a Third World country, or some nasty person, just there because they have no other job prospects. How much do they care about your food being cooked properly or even stored properly.
