Slim Down for Summer with That's Fit

20 questions with a Slashfoodie: Stefani Pollack

Stef with cupcakes

When new bloggers join the Slashfood team, we like to make sure they get a proper introduction to our readers. You've met Julie Tilsner, Bob Sassone, Ellen Slattery, Shayna Glick, Sarah J. Gim and Alanna Kaufman. Now meet the latest addition to our team, Stefani Pollack. -- Marisa McClellan

Do you have a personal blog?
Yes. I write Cupcake Project. I am making cupcakes for a friend's wedding. Each week, I make them a new cupcake and in the end, they'll get to pick which three flavors they want at their wedding. Their wedding will be the second wedding I have baked for. The photo above is from the first one.

What is your day job, or rather, what do you do when you're not food blogging?
I develop training materials for corporations. It has nothing to do with food, although I did work for Sara Lee for a while. All employees there got to participate in taste tests, which was a fun way to break up the day.

How long have you been blogging with Slashfood and what is your favorite post?
I've been blogging on Slashfood for about two months. My favorite post so far is, "What we eat may impact greenhouse gas emissions more than eating locally." I liked it because deciding which foods to eat is a topic that I personally wrestle with.

Do you have any non-food-related, non-blogging hobbies?
I love any kind of dancing. I also enjoy assisting my husband, who is a professional photographer, on photoshoots. That one is kind of a cheater answer though. He freelances for a food magazine so the photoshoots are food-related.

Not every foodie does, so we have to ask: Do you cook?
I can cook, but I rarely do it. We go out to eat far more often than we should and when we eat at home, my husband typically cooks. I do, of course, bake all the time!

What is your most prized utensil/gadget in the kitchen?
It's got to be my Kitchen-Aid. Love it!

List three things in your refrigerator right now:
Three things that haven't gone bad yet: Leftover balsamic whipped cream, fig jam, and naan. Three things that are rotting in the fridge: Stinky raw milk, ancient mashed rutabaga, broccoli soup that's seen better days.

You have to impress a date with a home-cooked meal. What are you going to make:
Why am I going on a date? M y husband would not be happy. Let's assume the date is with him. He likes anything I make as long I keep the kitchen fairly clean while I make it - neatness is not my specialty. Therefore, I'd probably go for a stew. I could just throw everything in the crock pot and let it go. Then I'd have plenty of time to make things neat and the house would smell amazing. I'd finish the meal with my Better than Sex cupcakes (hmm.. that would make the kitchen dirty again, but it would be worth it) and then would be sure to give him the opportunity to decide for himself whether or not they were better than sex.

What is the last thing you ate?
A bowl of amaranth flakes with some soy milk.

Confession time: What do you eat that will get you kicked off Slashfood?
I didn't know I could get kicked off based on what I eat - scanning my office now for a hidden camera. Phew - you won't see that I gnaw on cupcake wrappers. If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be? Total cereal. I can eat cereal for any meal of the day and if I were just going to eat one, I'd want it to be one that gave me 100% of my daily vitamins and minerals. If I were going to be less practical about it, I'd have to say my mom's noodle kugel.

Your Mom makes the best....
Noodle kugel.

Which chef would you most like to have come into your kitchen and cook you dinner?
Any member of my family. M y family all lives far away from me. I wish they lived closer and could come over and cook me dinner.

Who would you most like to eat dinner with?
See above. Other than my family, it's got to be my friends. I love sharing a meal with good friends. In fact, my husband and I run a dinner club in St. Louis that is all about forming closer friendships over good meals.

Your drink of choice?
I'm pretty addicted to Reed's Ginger Brew.

Where was your best restaurant dining experience?
I love eating outside on a nice night. My favorite restaurant experiences involve having a slow, top quality meal on a perfect night with great conversation. If it's cold, however, I like going to Iron Barley. They have the most amazing soups and it's the type of place where everyone feels at home.

The worst?
I'm not a fan of American Chinese food. I love the authentic stuff, but I'm disappointed most times I go out for Chinese food in the .

Do you want fries with that?
Yes! In fact, why "with that"? I just want fries!

What foods do you think should be banished from existence?
I know people are going to jump on me for this - but boxed cake mixes. It is not hard to make a cake from scratch and it's so much better! I'd also like to destroy those pre-made hamburger patties that contain an extremely low percentage of actual meat. A friend served them at a BBQ once and even after they were cooked, they still were a sick shade of grey.

What do you see as the biggest "thing" in food for the coming year?
I've heard lots of people say cotton candy is going to be hot this year. I've never liked cotton candy, but I'd certainly be curious to try a gourmet version of it.

Tip of the Day

After cooking a delicious meal, one of the most frustrating experiences happens when you are left with dishes full of stains that refuse to go away.
