Tip of the Day: How to clean a microwave oven with lemons

Lemons + a dirty microwave oven = clean microwave oven!

lemonsI opened my microwave oven the other day and realized I hadn't cleaned it in a couple of months. Amazingly, the sides weren't that bad this time, it was the roof of the oven. It looked like a bag of garbage had exploded inside. I didn't have any lemons at the time so I had to clean it the old-fashioned way, but I'm going to try this tip (which I've seen on a few sites and in a few books) next month.

Squeeze the juice of a lemon into a cup of water. Put the mixture into a bowl (microwave safe, of course) and heat it until it's boiling (a minute or so). Let it sit for another minute. The lemon and water mixture will loosen the food on the walls and roof of your microwave, making it a lot easier to clean. And as a bonus, your microwave will smell like lemons (without using a cleaning solution)!
