While supremely un-P.C., the term is certainly evocative - these poor kernels are left behind, never to blossom into white-frilled brides like their more pliant sisters. This metaphor is getting a little disturbing...
Anyhow, sometimes when you're making popcorn at home you end up with a whole cupful of old maids, languishing in the congealing butter at the bottom of the bowl. But don't despair, you can help these kernels fulfill their true destiny - being eaten by you. Simply pour the unpopped kernels into a jar and add a tablespoon of water to rehydrate them, giving a good shake. Allow to sit for a few days, then try popping again. Your old maids should be fresh and eligible for the popper. If not, try the water trick again. If that doesn't work, they probably just have a fear of commitment.
