I have a co-worker who frequently sends me links to fun/geeky/wacky food-related things on the interwebs. This morning, he sent me two bacon-centric links within a matter of minutes. Because apparently, the whole world has bacon on the brain.
The first was this report from the Digital Journal, announcing that the Department of Public Health in Los Angeles had banned the sale of bacon-wrapped hot dogs. The reason given for the ban by Terrence Powell of the LA County Health Department? "Bacon is a potentially hazardous food." Street vendors can continue to sell bacon, provided that they buy a new cart at the cost of $26,000, otherwise they have to remove the offending item from their menu.
If you are mourning the loss of bacon from your outdoor food carts, xkdc reminds us that one can still cook bacon at home, albeit to the serious detriment of individual health. So funny and so, so true.
Thanks Eric!

So what exactly is the problem with bacon wrapped hot dogs in CA? "When asked how many people were getting sick from bacon, Powell responded, "Thats kind of a nebulous number." Uh huh. NO data to support his statement from a Health Department food safety status? Me thinks it is not about food, but money... money to be taken from food vendors by the Health Dept to support the government pinheads who think up these money making rules. Or maybe it is the Extra Bacon option from the brick and mortar store across the street that pay someone in the department to eliminate those pesky and "unhealthy" street vendors from the competition?
As for bacon wrapped hot dogs... I remember when Mom would slice hot dogs in half, put cheese in the slice and then wrap the whole thing in bacon. Broil until done. The family laughs about that meal today--thinking someone probably was trying to kill us. With fat, salt, nitrates, nitrosamines, or choking on the toothpick that held it all together!

all this bacon talk reminds me of the homer simpson sandwich...a pound of butter wrapped with a pound of bacon between the buns....
actually that sounds kind of dirty.

God do I miss those bacon-wrapped hot dogs. Used to a couple of them at USC games.
