SoyJoy Bars: just tell yourself they're something else

soyjoy bar
You know when you are eating your fourth tofu salad of the day for the eighteenth day in a row of this hell we call "diet before bikini season?" And on the salad there is a slab of stupidly healthy tofu that when you bite into it, you close your eyes and tell yourself it's actually a piece of chocolate cake?

Wait, am I the only one who does that?

SoyJoy Bars are something like that.

The bars are not necessarily for dieters, but are a very modest 130 calories of soy nutrition. They come in a wide variety of flavors, all of which I tried.

My Slashfoodie friends, I'm not going to lie to you. I almost couldn't choke down the hard, dry first bite of the Strawberry bar, let alone finish the almost powdery and strangely chewy-hard textured brick. I was almost tempted to give the entire bag of the rest of the flavors away to, oh, I don't know, friends who also eat Power Bars (which clearly means they are not in it for the taste). However, i had to tell myself to give the SoyJoy bars a second chance.

The second try was better, and on the third bar (I was on the Raisin Almond flavor by now), I had convinced myself that if I thought SoyJoy bars were more of a brick-like biscotti that was meant for dunking in a glass of vanilla soy milk rather than a "granola" bar, they weren't all that bad.

I wouldn't buy these on my own, but hell, at least I won't be throwing away the half bag in my pantry!

Ah well. It would have been great if these had been palatable. Back to the basic apple, I guess.

Cheers!

I have to wonder how much they paid for that product placement on 30 Rock.

Why do they have to SAY the eggs are frozen? And WHY is there parmesan cheese in my granola bar???

Where's my free coupon? I'll try one.

The first time I took a bite I thought "oh, I am never buying these" and soon after I found myself wishing I had a lot more. I can't bring myself to buy them for a dollar or more each, but after eating a few of them I sometimes find myself craving them.

They do have a different texture & flavor, but I enjoy them. After the first bar or so, of course. :)

How utterly bizarre.
