Potato Chip Taste Test - Plain

When we set out to find the best of the bunch, we don't go spuddin' around. With the help of Anchor's Chip of the Month, AOL Food's panel munched, crunched, nibbled and gobbled our way through nearly 5 dozen kinds of plain potato chips in search of the tip top chip in all the land. See if you agree with our findings, or if we totally skipped over your favorite tater.

(Note to folks who are writing in saying they can't find the winner -- just use the arrows to navigate through the gallery. The results are ranked down from 15-1. And we hear ya! Cape Cod will definitely be in the next batch of reviews.)

The flavored chip tasting will follow in a few weeks, after our sodium levels normalize.

Their Salt'n Vinegar chips will knock your socks off (and pucker your lips for half a day)! It's too bad that there seem to be geographical limitations to chip distribution but, honestly, that's probably what results in such very high quality.

On a side note someone also mentioned you didn't try Ms. Vicki's, which I think was also a mistake, but they are way overpriced anyway.

I LOVE THE LONG HISTORY OF THIS PRODUCT AND THE LONG LIST OF FAMILY MEMBERS THAT RUN THINGS WELL. THANK YOU FOR THE CUSTOMER SERVICE TOO!! MY WHOLE FAMILY EATS THESE CHIPS. I USED TO LUG THEM BACK FROM VACATIONS WITH ME IN THE BACK OF THE CAR. BY THE CASE TO FLORIDA, AND NEVER ONCE DID THEY GO STALE OR TASTE DIFFERENT WHEN I OPENED THE LAST BAG!! NOW I GIVE THEM AS GIFTS TO FRIENDS AND NATIVE FLORIDIANS WHO LOVE THEM TOO. CAPE COD CHIPS ARE GOOD TOO, BUT MY ALLEGIANCE IS TO HOMETOWN TRI-SUM!! TRY THEM, JUST GO TO THE WEB SITE AND GET A SAMPLE PACK.. YOU WILL NOT BE SORRY!

Maybe we'll see some Cape Cod on your flavored potato chip list?? I just tried their new flavor Cheddar Jack & Sour Cream and far surpassed any other flavored chip I've tried.

Why do you say in your headlines that there will be a winner when there isn't?

Wow--the fact that I didn't even see it in the TOP 15 meant, to me, that the test panel hadn't even tried them. Luckily, I saw the note that they would be "in the next batch of reviews". That reinstated my faith in your reviewers. Because once they try them, I'm sure they'll find them to be right up there with the best!
(I was certainly a little biased, since I took my kids to their factory to see how they were made--a cute little operation, but certainly no slouch!)

She always buys us 3 - 4 bags of chips. These chips are always perfect, never burnt. They are light and fluffy and have the best flavor of any chip. I am glad I can't buy them here or I would weight about 400 lbs.

As I have not tried many of the brands that were sampled, I cannot say whether any one of apparently dozens of regional/local brands may or may not be superior to anything I know, but I am very surprised that Martin's Kettle-Cook'd chips did not make it to the top tier. Of all the potato chips I've ever eaten in my life, Martin's are the only ones that rose to the level of "addictive." I have tried a number of the chips on the top 15 list, and none come even close to that distinctive texture and flavor; most, in fact, disappoint.

But it's entirely possible that some chips only begin to shine once you've eaten a few batches, or sampled more that a few in succession.

As an illustration of just how good Martin's chips are, though they are made in Pennsylvania and only distributed within a fairly narrow area, the Publix supermarket manager for Tallahassee would send his own truck up to bring Martin's down (this was 20+ years ago; I don't know if Publix in Tallahassee still carries them). The sandwhich shop on the FSU campus would pile on a huge handful of these chips with each sandwich order, and it used to be a high point of my day to dive into them.

Still, as the saying goes, there's no accounting for taste, and different people will choose different foods (case in point: the commercial success of Subway's, which can't hold a candle to Jersey Mike's, at least in my not-terribly-humble opinion). Still, for true potato chip afficionados, Martin's Kettle-Cook'd chips are a treat you should actively seek out and enjoy.

Then get back to the gym to work off all those fat calories!
