This is a love story.
When I was a kid, I was hopelessly addicted to Munchos, the chips that Julie wrote about earlier. I still like them, but my current love affair has turned to Natural Lays Thick Cut Potato Chips with Sea Salt.
These fantastic chips are shelved (in my supermarket, anyway) in the aisle with the other "fancy" or gourmet chips: Kettle, Terra Red Bliss, and others. I'm not really sure why. There's nothing particularly different about them (unless you count orgasmic taste as different) and they're not exactly healthy (sorry, the "Natural" in the title is probably very true, but that doesn't mean these are low fat or low calorie). They should probably be in the regular chip aisle. Then again, if they were, more people would buy them and my store would probably run out and I'd be upset that night.
What makes these chips so good? It starts with the sea salt I guess. I've become a real big fan of sea salt the past couple of years, whether it's on cashews and almonds, whatever I make for dinner, or potato chips. Sea salt really does make foods taste different than if you had regular table salt on them. These chips manage to be really hearty (they're thick cut) with a strong potato chip flavor, but they're also very light and crispy and clean. They're really the perfect regular potato chip.
On a related note, I just found out that Lays is the company that makes another one of my favorite chips, Miss Vickie's! Their Country Onion with 3 Cheese Cheese Kettle Chips are outrageous.

Dear North Fork Sweet Potato Potato Chip,
I felt the need to write you a letter since you were slighted in the chip tasting contest. I took part in this historic event but I need you to know that, you alone had my top vote. From the moment I saw you on the napkin, I knew that we would be in love forever. You were so gentle and kind that you barely stained the napkin. In spite of what the panel said, you are MY #1 chip. If I didn't know the other panelists, I would almost call this an act of racism. Their narrow minds could not grasp the thought of a brown chip. Ohhh, but I do! Pay them no mind my delectable wafer of sweet potato chipness. You come from a long lineage of royal yams. And to that I say, power to the sweet potato!

How could you have forgotten "Ruffles". They are without a doubt the best chips going. I've been eating them for over 30 years. Any other chips taste awful compared to "Ruffles" Original or "Ruffles" barbecue which I can't find anymore.

Made some fresh ones at home a few weeks ago using a recipe by Alton Brown. The Best Chips. Ever. Anywhere.
Only one that actually tops those are the chips at Ruth's Chris. Those too will stop me in my tracks. Having fresh made chips just puts me off anything from a bag for a good long while.
Having said that and putting all food snobbery aside, I have a bag of the Sea Salt Lays in the pantry now and I have to agree with Bob, they're GOOD.

We try all the new/recommended chips when they show up at the market, but those thick cut Lays are a great standby-just shows that the big manufacturers can get chips right too.
