Orange peel bowls are so simple to make, and they add such elegance to the table. You can make them a day in advance, but freeze them if you do. You may also want to freeze them if you are using them to serve something cold, like sorbet.
To make a bowl, place an orange on a table, and find where the navel is so that when you cut, the navel will be at the bottom of one of the bowls. Insert a knife into the center of the orange on the diagonal, and proceed to make similar inserts in a zig-zag formation around the fruit. Separate the halves. Running a thumb between the orange sections and the peel, carefully peel the fruit out of its peel. If the bowls won't stand up by themselves, cut a small slice off of each end to create a flat surface.
I've used these to serve orange and avocado salads, and they're also great for fruit salads, sweet potato mashes, sorbets and pretty much anything.
