I can easily see how bottle caps that read "Try Legal Weed" could be a bit confusing. If I saw it for the first time, I might wonder if it were hemp beer or somehow could get you stoned.
As it turns out, Weed Ales and Lagers produced by Mt. Shasta Brewing are named as such because they are brewed in a town called Weed, California.
According to an associated press report in the San Fransisco Chronicle, the town has a long tradition of having fun with its name. "A sign posted on the way out of town reads, 'Temporarily Out of Weed,' while another says '100 Percent Pure Weed.'"
Federal alcohol regulators don't get the joke. They ordered that sales stop on beers with the "Try Legal Weed" caps.
Do you think "Try Legal Weed" is a cute play on the town's name or is it misleading and making light of an illegal drug?

I've been to Weed. The people there are pretty wacky in a fun and good-natured way. I don't see anything wrong with the bottle caps. I will be looking for some legal weed at my liquor store as soon as possible.
And yes, I am temporarily out of Weed. More's the pity!

No I like the play on the name of the town. I am sorry but I truely think there are more things to be concerned about then a little play on words. This whole country needs to laugh more at itself then it does. Or I should say the regulator needs to laugh more then they do. I laugh at us all the time!

It's a great name. The regulators need to take a step back.

That is ridiculous, and I hope they fight it. It's not like the label says "smoke illegal marijuana from these fine local drug dealers..."

See what happens when kids who get picked on in school come into positions of power...they take away the fun. Sometimes people just need to lighten up...

I just visited this Brewery this past weekend, I have a cabin in Weed, Ca. I love this little town and if you came to visit you would understand. I spoke with the owner of Mt. Shasta Brewery and told him I support him and his beer till the end. The Regulators need to get over it and move on, like someone mentioned above there are other things they should be concerned with, this is not one of them. It doesn't say "Smoke illegal weed and get stoned". So when Budweiser says "This Buds for you" should we be concered that they are selling us beer made from Buds of the marajuana plant????

I have been and drove through this town too many times between Chico, CA. and Medford, Or. The town is a little off, but come on, can you really outlaw their name. Take a look at some of the over the counter names of "herbal energy" pills. This country is fantastic, but there are way more ways to cut down on drugs then outlawing a name. Their meth problem in this town is a little more harmful.
