If you keep up with the news, you've probably heard about the food shortages and riots in Haiti and Egypt. You've also probably heard about the drought in Australia and the fact that China and India are limiting exports of rice. That's all going to lead to a lot of problems worldwide, as it already has in some places, but have food shortages hit the US?According to this article in the New York Sun, the answer is yes. Some stores in New York and California are limiting the amount of rice and flour that consumers can take home. Retailers are also complaining about spotty deliveries for rice in California.
We tend to think of food shortages as something very far away, something that doesn't affect us. With the possibility that Americans could be affected by this, will we be able to come up with a solution in time to prevent a real crisis?

Right now getting the food isn't the problem it's the cost of getting the food that is. I have been watching the price of food in the grocery stores and the prices are beginning to rise almost as frequently as gas prices are. Food prices are doubling and tripling, pretty soon people won't be getting the food not because it isn't there but because they cannot afford to pay for it.

God help us.........between the recalls and the gas prices. I have had to buy gas, and cut out alot of food purchases. Just think if you went to the store to shop and it wasnt filled to the ceiling with stuff, or they didnt havent many things that you wanted! Until that happens people wont wake up!

Was going to post something longer which pretty much amounted to this: Why don't we widen our definition of edible foods? There are a lot of things out there going to waste because we're stuck on the idea of our current "staple" crops.

Are we sure this is not another political ploy now that we see the market turning upward after the slump...I just don't trust the politicians....they put thepossibility out in the main stream media and then it takes on a life of it's own whether it's true or not. I'm thinking NOT!!

Here in Prescott, Az we are seeing the prices go up .. and in some cases, a lot .. as much as 20%.
I have a "bunch" of chickens and two weeks ago, their feed JUMPED a dollar a bag.
Less building and more planting might be a good idea for a little while. Fix what we have and make things a little better for everyone.
