With food costs rising and your dollar stretching less and less, now is the time to reduce food waste. One of the best ways to not waste food is to not buy too much in the first place. If you're buying foodstuffs and then not using them in time, then you are almost literally throwing that money away. That being my most important tip, there are lots more here. Some of the highlights of this list are using extra bits of stuff in a salad and keeping a list of what you've just put in the fridge (maybe on a note pad attached to the refrigerator door). One thing the list here doesn't mention that I think saves a lot of money is to plan meals for the week, and only get groceries that you need for those meals.
Hopefully some of these tips will work for you. I know some of them seem like common sense, but not everyone thinks the same way. If you can implement even a few, maybe it'll save you a few bucks, and every dollar counts.

There is usually one banana left from a bunch, it seems, that no one wants. When that baby turns brown, fling it into the freezer, collect them and you will always have bananas ready for banana loaf or muffins....

If you have yogurt that is about to expire... pour it into ice cube trays. When the cubes are frozen pop them out and store them in freezer baggies. They can be used in fruit smoothies. Since they're frozen they make the smoothie really thick. No need for ice cream anymore in milk shakes either. Very healthy!!
