Journalist Joanne Chen, an unabashed, lifelong lover of sweets, had a hard time understanding why that's not the universal reaction. In The Taste of Sweet, she examines the physical, psychological and historical relationship between sweet flavors and humans, and discovers some pretty extraordinary things about our tongues, brains, societal perceptions, and why some folks will always have room for dessert. Read her 10 Surprising Facts About Our Relationship with Sweets, take her Are You A Supertaster Quiz and come back here to share your scores and pose your questions to Joanne Chen in the comments thread. She'll answer them in an upcoming blog post. How sweet is that?

And for those who would enjoy further insight into the questions/results of the Are You A Supertaster?, quiz, the author offers the following, "Researchers have detected a link between overweight subjects and non-tasting tendencies. Severe ear infections may also cause less intense taste experiences.
Of course, biology isn't destiny, and much of what we eat results from culture and learning. So while the quiz offers a good idea of your taste profile, sensory specialists can provide a better assessment by running taste tests, analyzing your tongue, and counting your taste buds."

I like hot spicy food yet i can't stand horseradish. I love key lime pie but I also love black forest cake? if you like brusselsprouts, that just makes you weird!!!!

I would only drink 1 glass, but I would most definately finish it. But I wouldn't drink more than my share either. If I had a 2nd glass, I probably would have trouble finishing it.
I also don't like question 8 because I don't like coffee at all. It doesn't matter what you put in it, I can still taste the coffee and to me it's all kinds of yuck. Nothing against caffeine though. I like tea and I like Diet Coke.

On the subject of chololate; while we've read some great articles about cacao %'s in chocolate, anti-oxidants in dark chocolate, "nibs," etc. we would like to know more about the terminology used to describe chocolate flavors. Wine, as an example, has it's own vocabulary. Is there a good article/book out there that tackles chocolate flavors and appropriate verbiage?

I put corn as a preference to brussels sprouts. I love corn, but I never eat it as I cannot digest it. I'd rather have apple pie or cheesecake with strawberries or something with apricot for dessert. As I said, you need a "none of the above" or more choices.

one example, I created over 29 products for President's Choice Brand, (which has evolved into Sam's Choice ) THe criteria was it must taste better than the leading brand, and cost less to make. I only met one person that had a more sensitive sense of taste than myself. I would never drink Coffee, and lemon flavor has oils and essenses that are irritating to the sensitive taste. Dark Chocolate is my most favorite product.
Most people need strong flavors to please them. a true taster only needs a mild flavor

It might be advantageous to add a neither selection question such as the coffee question. I never drink coffee. And it might also help if the test were a lot longer. For example, I may eat broccoli, but I will not eat dressings/mayo - can't take the smell or the taste. Won't touch spaghetti because of the sauce and the texture, but I love Pizza.
I thought the gagging comment was odd because the smell of many foods put me into gag mode without even tasting them.
I have heard that taste buds die as we get older and that would make sense to me because as I get older I can add things like BBQ sauce which I would not touch as a child and I can finally remain seated at a table that has an open jar of mayo.
I could list many more things that I will not eat, but I think these few examples will tell the story.

I too retired, work now as an intuitive, yet smell and taste provide a very sure way to know what client is coming in. I smell or taste the persons strongest dead relatives perfume or after shave. A bit odd, but works.

Otherwise, this quiz was mostly about preferences! I prefer corn over brussel sprouts and my coffee with milk and sugar. I don't even know what a stiff drink is. Anyways, I found this quiz interesting and intellectual. I kinda hated the yes or no questions though.
