Tip of the Day: Mix your own spices

You need 1 tsp. of Chinese Five Spice powder in a recipe, do you really want to buy an entire container? Luckily, you don't have to.
Over at e-cookbooks.net, you can find plenty of recipes for blending spice combinations like chili powder, five spice, and Italian herb seasoning. For example, chili powder is simply a mixture of the following ingredients:

3 tbsp. paprika
1 tbsp. ground cumin
2 tbsp oregano
1 tsp. red or cayenne pepper
1/2 tsp. garlic powder

For pickling spice, garlic salt, curry powder and more, check out recipes here on essortment.

And for baking spices like apple pie spice, take a look here at one of my favorite sites, Baking Bites.
