Make a dozen mini doughnuts in 50 seconds

Doughnut Machine
The only thing keeping me from buying the Dough-Nu- Matic this very second is concern about storage space for another large kitchen appliance that would only get used a few times. Oh - and the $129.99 price tag.

The Dough-Nu- Matic is straight out of the Jetsons. According to the advertisement on Sky Mall, "The Dough-Nu-Matic automatically forms, fries and drains delectable mini-doughnuts in just 50 seconds!" It would be so fun to have piping hot doughnuts as toppers for my cupcakes. Why not put a doughnut on top of a cupcake? Everyone needs that extra fat!

What about hot mini-doughnuts as a quick and un-nutritious after-school snack?

Does anyone else want this product? Does anyone already own the Dough-Nu-Matic? I'd love to hear how well it works and what kinds of doughnuts you've made.

We own the Dough-Nu-Matic, and I've had somewhat good results with the original recipe printed in the booklet (we were a little disappointed with how thin the doughnut batter came out, as the doughnuts were so shallow that they were not "tripping the flipper" partway through the process (a metal flap catches the parcooked donut, causing it to flip over to complete frying.) We tried an alternate recipe we found online for "doughnut machine donuts" and it was an absolute disaster, totally runny. Came out more like very tiny funnel cakes.

Does anyone have a perfected/improved recipe for donuts using this specific maker?

In all fairness, using the original recipe in the booklet, we were able to get donuts that looked & tasted just like it (at the end, we shook them in a paper bag of cinnamon & sugar) and they're incredibly delicious. We'll just need to tweak the leavening to get them to puff high enough to trip the flipper so they'll flip over halfway through.
