Growing up I always assumed the switch in US production came as a result of the Cuban missile crisis and our refusal to buy Cuban sugar and the inability of US agriculture to supply sufficient product . I recall the change in flavor occurring at that time, and then no longer drinking colas. Does anyone know if this is an accurate memory to any degree? Was this the moment of breakthrough for corn sweetener into the soft drink market?

As far as sugar in soda, according to the History channel sugar was phased out for HFCS in the 70's. But you can find Coke made with sugar during Passover, when they make kosher Coke (it has a yellow cap). It can be hard to find, but it's available in 2L, unlike the glass bottles from Mexico.

Of course I have to watch my speaking/typing because I build ads and if I slipped into lolspeak I would feel like a uh, yeah... I do sometimes for fun say "i can has" and things of that nature but it's fun.

Also, the Coke from Mexico (with sugar! yay) is fantastic, I haven't liked Coke since I was a kid but like it again now (about 20 years later)...
Some of the junk they put in stuff to avoid sugar is way worse for ya, I would rather just limit my intake ;)

Oh yeah, and we also found "Blue Sky" soda which also uses sugar.
