Well, today is March 15th and if you know PETA, then you should know what day it is. Yep, it's Eat a Tasty Animal for PETA day.Oh, you thought I meant the other PETA. Nah, I meant People for the Eating of Tasty Animals. You can look them up on Face Book. The group even posted an event page for the occasion.
Check it out. And eat a tasty animal tonight!

I'm not even a vegetarian but that offends me. I don't think you should advocate that. PETA members (the real PETA) and vegans obviously are passionate about the consumtion of animals and the state of our nation's handling of livestock. Their beliefs should be respected even if one doesn't abide by them or even agree with them.
I love Slashfood but why is it that sometimes you guys are so inconsiderate of your audience? Sorry, I don't mean to rant, and I don't normally, but this really sparked me. It's just forwarding a message which makes less of someone elses true concern.

The exhortation at the end does push this over the line from reporting to advocacy.
Which is fine if it's made clear that this is the individual poster's opinion, but that's not clear here. Is this indeed the official position of Slashfood?

You have the right to be offended....just like Slashfood has the right to post this. No one said the world is a warm and fuzzy place. And quite frankly, individual opinions really don't matter to everyone else.
I'll eat my tasty animals as I like. PETA can protest as they like. If they try to stop my fork from touching my meal, though, I shall fork right through them and keep on eating :)

I'm a vegetarian, and this is nothing I don't hear every day, living in a household of three hard-core carnivores. After 15 years eating veg, you sort of grow a thick skin against the dinnertime jokes of "hey, try the broccoli... like it? It's made of beef! Ha ha!" or "Hope you like your veggie burger.. I'm sure enjoying my biiiig hamburger covered in tasty bacon! Mmm!!!" etc.
Most people think meat is tasty, and lots of vegetarians do, too... look how much fake meat is on the market :)

diet and religion are on the list of things I don't need people telling me about. I don't care what you believe or don't believe, what you eat or don't eat. As long as your beliefs/habits don't bother me and mine, I don't care.

I grew up on a small farm and as a result I am aware of the value of meat. What concerns me is that a lifestyle of meat or conversely of veg is often pushed upon people. What I enjoy about Shlashfood is that i get the best of both worlds. As a meat eater I am equally concerned about my vegetables. Neither should feel offended by the other and if they are, I suggest (in my infinite internet wisdom) that they grow up and deal with it.
Also, I dont expect for the majority of meat consumers to share my experience. it is not logical to assume that all people who consume meat or veg actually understand first hand the production.

Pardon me for running on. But you dont have the right to be offended. Any idiot can be offended. Perhaps what is meant is that you have the right to disagree but with that comes understanding.

#8 Eugene, it's nice that you feel that way, but your earlier post is exactly what I'm talking about. Since most of the other posters here were feeling a bit offended by the idea of "people eating tasty animals", why taunt them with "I love eating cute little duckies!"?
I won't bother you with vegetarian propaganda if you don't be a dick.

at Gobo:
yes, thank you for proving my point, your inability to make a point without being personally insulting more than justifies my rhetorical comment. People like you throw insults around and put on your airs of moral superiority and then you act offended when someone comes down to your gutter level to make a point.
And I do love eating cute duckies. At least I don't live in a make believe world where I think my food comes from the food fairy. I like meat, and I realize that an animal has to die for me to consume it. Why should I dress it up, or use euphamisms?
So please, get back on your high horse and both of you can go eat hay and barley somewhere and shut up with your "I'm so insulted" crap.

Just to make it clear, my beef (ahem) with this post has nothing to do with meat-eaters vs. vegetarians, but that it steps over the line from reporting to advocacy.
We all have our biases, journalists included, but this makes me wonder: Is Slashfood's goal to report on food news so we can form our own opinions or is it to push a particular agenda?

Thank you Kitt, this is closer to my point. I'm NOT a vegetarian but I do respect their ideals. I don't consume much meat (and when I do it's mostly fish) but I feel one way or the other about meating eating vs veganism. I do however feel it's wrong to purposely antagonize others as the false PETA group is doing. That being said, why would Shayna take it upon herself to forward such a message. In that regard she is advocating rancor.
There's a differnce in having strong beliefs or passion about something (while informing others about it) and purposely opposing/mocking someone's beliefs only to "get a rise". It shows ignorance and a lack of compassion for your fellow human being (not to mention animals in this case).

I hate to interrupt, but I did not mean to be offensive. This was a news snippet I came across that I thought was very amusing and worth sharing. I don't think I was advocating anything, even with the ending line of "eat a tasty animal tonight". I think that you should eat whatever works best for you.

That it get a mention here, though, is fine with me. This group exists, it has an agenda, yes, that's news. But the last line: "And eat a tasty animal tonight!" is telling me I should embrace that agenda, too. Not fine.

Wow, Eugene, take a deep breath.
I didn't call you any names. Read my post: I was asking you NOT to be one of those dicks who rails against vegetarians and takes pleasure in taunting them. If you'll remember (or take the time to read), I'm one of the few people here who WASN'T insulted. So I'm not clear on what you're even talking about, frankly... but it's the wrong target to shoot at.
The whole reason I'm a vegetarian (pescatarian, actually) is because I know exactly where my food comes from in intimate detail, and choose to eat mostly vegetables supplemented with seafood -- largely locally sourced. I'm under no myths about "food fairies"... good lord, I've no idea where that came from, but it made me laugh.
Again, I think you're taking a huge amount of offense from mis-reading my post. But from reading your other posts, my guess is that you were hoping for an excuse to cut loose on a weak, whiny vegetarian and jumped at the chance. Well, congratulations.

This is no different than the recent post about Pi day. It's another themed 'Day' with an agenda to eat a certain food.
And for the record, a little black humor hurts nobody. You don't have to like it if you don't want to, but don't start crowing about how offensive it is, just take your readership elsewhere if it bothers you so much.
