Of course, that headline makes it seem like I'm no longer sick. That's not the case at all. I'm still under the weather, though not nearly as bad as I was a few days ago.
I've been sick for the past week. It really wiped me out (which you can probably tell from my lack of posts here). If you haven't been sick this season yet, just wait, I'm sure it's coming. I know some people who had the throw 'n go (I hope that's self-explanatory), but I was "lucky" enough just to have a fever, body aches, chills, coughing, a scratchy throat and complete and utter exhaustion. So I spent most of the week just sitting on the couch, wrapped in a comforter, watching TV. And also trying to decide what the hell to eat or drink for the week. Just about everything I tried to eat or drink tasted funny.
After the jump, the four items I ate the most while sick, and the four I didn't/couldn't eat.
ATE
1. Popsicles: This was my go-to meal for the week. They're light, flavorful, and best of all cold on my bad throat. One of the few foods that actually tasted like they're supposed to taste.
2. Chicken noodle soup: Cliche or not, I think it really does help. It's not fun making it when you're sick though, all that chopping of carrots and celery and chicken.
3. Pepsi: I don't know why, but drinking Pepsi is something that has always made me feel better when I'm sick.
4. Coricidin: One night I think I actually had them as a meal.
COULDN'T EAT
1. Tea: Oh, the first day of my cold I certainly drank a lot of tea. Probably around a dozen cups. Then after that I couldn't stand the stuff anymore, which is odd because I'm a tea fanatic and it's usually the one thing I drink/eat most when I'm feeling bad. Just the thought of it on my tongue and in my throat made me gag.
2. Hot Pockets: I tried to eat one of their BBQ Chicken sandwich things and it tasted remarkably bad. I had Popsicles for dinner that night.
3. Chips: I tried to eat these with the Hot Pockets, thinking that something really salty would be something I could actually taste. No such luck. Just tasted funny to me.
4. Pasta: Even though I was sick and probably didn't want to eat a big, filling meal, one night I decided to make spaghetti, with sauce and grated cheese. It, um, didn't taste right at all and I simply didn't enjoy it. The grated Parmesan tasted especially funny, like pencil shavings mixed with stale Cheez Wiz.

My go-to food when I am sick is anything spicy. My favorites include Thai curry, Skyline Chili, and we have a great Chinese delivery joint for when I am too sick to leave the house to pick up takeout - their hot and sour soup, and chicken with veggies and garlic sauce (extra spicy) always hit the spot. Iced green tea with loads of fresh lime juice tastes great. And I prefer ice cold grape juice over any other beverage when my throat hurts.

It is not a good idea to consume sugar when you are sick. It weakens your immune system, which will probably result in you being sick for longer. It's best to just eat nutritious food, drink TONS of water, and try to get all the nutrients your body needs.

I'm currently in the middle of a funky cold/flu-type virus (my doctor just could id as a virus, nothing more) and the 4 things I can eat are very similar to yours. I haven't been hungry and most stuff tastes metallic right now, but I keep eating at least once a day to give my body the ammo it needs to fight this thing. 1) Chicken soup. I started out with home made and switched to canned after it ran out. 2) Diet Coke - had given it up, but it's the only that tastes OK and is somehow soothing. 3) Halls - I'm eating them for lunch right now. 4) Meat - again, I'm not eating much, but I did have some chicken strips and ate them quickly. Same with a little canadian bacon I made. Not even sure if I could taste them, but my body is craving something in meat right now so I've upped my vitamin intake too.
Can't eat.
1) Water - really odd. I'm usually very good about drinking water, especialyl when I'm sick. It just makes me cough and gag right now. I am drinking stuff other than Diet Coke though, because I know that's not good for me. (I am only having 1 Diet Coke a day, but I know I need other, nutritious stuff, especially while sick).
2) Bread/toast/etc - as a carb-addict this is odd too, but it mostly tastes metallic right now. In any form - Englich muffings, toast, crackers, etc.
