New Product: Chocolate Mix Skittles

bag of chocolate mix skittles
How is it that I've never heard of these new Chocolate Mix Skittles until this very moment, when I popped them out of a vending machine? The bag features s'mores, vanilla, chocolate caramel, chocolate pudding and brownie batter Skittles, in various shades of cream and brown. This is the kind of stuff that gets sugar freaks like me all excited.

The vanilla and brownie batter flavors taste a bit off to me (and since when is vanilla a chocolate flavor?), but the s'mores, chocolate caramel and chocolate pudding are tasty. Similar to Jelly Belly jelly beans of the same flavors, but with a Skittle's crunchy outer coating.

Candy Addict gives a good rundown of the flavors. They describe the brownie batter as "someone took fake, store-bought chemical-y brownie mix and blended in a tablespoon of cold butter."

Now if Mars would just bring licorice Skittles to America (they have them in Italy, in a black bag, with flavors like aniseed and licorice mint), I'd be thrilled. If anyone knows somewhere in the US or online that carries these, I'd be grateful for the info.

Because I knew they were a limited flavour I ended up buying about 20 bags over the course of the summer and convincing many a friend to make the trek to my neck of the woods to sample the aforementioned delicacy.

Because I don't think anyone at Slashfood has ever been to a convenience store, family reunion, church picnic or anywhere else where "normal people" eat food.

Honestly, this is like the 300th Slashfood post where the author has willfully stated at the very beginning of the post that they had never heard of a common product or food combination:

"Gosh, I've never heard of people eating crab-stuffed flounder before!"

"I've never heard of Pancake Day!"

"The muffuletta is something new to me."

"I've never even gotten a chance to taste a turkey that has been deep fried."

"I've never even heard of the supermarket chain Harris Teeter..."

"Cherries Jubilee is one of those foods that I've heard of but never had..."

"We had never heard of Primanti Bros. sandwiches..."

"I had never before heard of sponge candy..."

"I mean, I've never even heard of Raspberry Cream Pie..."

"This is the first time that I've even heard of the World Food Awards..."

I'm just waiting for Bob to post something about "this crazy new combo people are doing: peanut butter and jelly!" Seriously - you guys need to stop posting so much and get out more!

Or Pancake Day, sponge candy and who the hell are the Primanti Bros.?

Guess I'm living under the same rock. Scoot over, will ya? It's crowded under here.

"Pancake Day"... I grew up as a Southern Methodist in a rural country in metro Atlanta, yet somehow I was fully aware of "Pancake Day" (which I call "Shrove Tuesday") *before* converting to Anglicanism in 1995. Oh yeah, I learned about Shrove Tuesday at something called "elementary school" - I guess they don't have "elementary schools" in the rest of the country.

"Sponge candy"? I guess you ARE living under a rock. We had it in Snellville, Georgia in 1976 (and possibly before that)... so what's your excuse??

"Who the hell are the Primanti Bros"... Jeez - even if I *weren't* a Pittsburgh Steelers fan since 1974, I would have heard about Primanti Brothers from the 150 or so specials about them on Food Network, Entertainment Tonight, Inside Edition, Sports Center, Monday Night Football... or any of the *other* 100+ syndicated TV shows that have been to Primanti Brothers in the past 20 years.

As mentioned, I am a completely normal white guy from rural Georgia... yet I've eaten at Primanti Brothers TWICE in my 36 years on this Earth. My girlfriend has been outside of North Carolina THREE times in her 35 years - once to Toronto and twice to London... and yet *she* knows about Primanti Brothers, and how they put fries in their sandwiches...

Seriously... you people need to get out more, or subscribe to "Saveur" or even "Arthur Frommer's Budget Travel"... or something. I know about EVERYTHING I mentioned in my previous post, and I don't even run a food blog, for God's sake...

"I've never heard of people eating crab-stuffed flounder before!" - I first had it at the Ocean Grill restaurant in Vero Beach, Florida in 1982.

"I've never heard of Pancake Day!" - As I said, my elementary school teachers taught us about "Shrove Tuesday" back in the early 80s.

"The muffuletta is something new to me." - I first had a muffuletta at Huey's in Atlanta in 1987. I had my first "real" muffuletta from Central Grocery in New Orleans in 1992.

"I've never even gotten a chance to taste a turkey that has been deep fried." - My grandfather made fried turkey for us in 1989. I remember 'cos it was the first time I'd had it, and I had only graduated from HS a few months earlier.

"I've never even heard of the supermarket chain Harris Teeter..." - Anyone in the southeastern United States heard knows about Harris Teeter, In fact, the Harris Teeter in Toco Hills in Atlanta had a "Gentile deli" and a "Kosher Deli" back in 1990.

"Cherries Jubilee is one of those foods that I've heard of but never had..." - I had this at the Pleasant Pheasant restaurant in Atlanta in 1977.

"We had never heard of Primanti Bros. sandwiches..." - as mentioned in the previous post, I've eaten there twice... and both times were during extended layovers in Pittsburgh. I am a Steelers fan, but I only learned about Primanti Brothers thanks to a taxi driver in 1992. Since then, I've seen them 100 times on various cable shows.

"I had never before heard of sponge candy..." - There was a candy store in the backwater that was Snellville, GA in 1976... and they sold "sponge candy", along with "seafoam candy", divinity, peanut brittle, and lots of other stuff.

"I mean, I've never even heard of Raspberry Cream Pie..." - One of my aunts made this her specialty; it's been at my family reunions since (at least) 1975. To be fair though, she normally made a "mixed berry cream pie". Raspberries were a major component, however.

"This is the first time that I've even heard of the World Food Awards..." - Me too. But then again, I don't run a "food blog", either.

Seriously, folks. Believe it or not, I'm not trying to "out cool" the people that run Slashfood. I'm just trying to say that, as a completely average guy from the suburbs of metro Atlanta, I've experienced all this stuff... and I DON'T run a food blog.

Imagine that the people that run Slashfood ran a TV blog too... (Bob, I'm looking at you!). Now imagine that this past Friday, "SlashTV" ran a story about "this new TV show called 'Lost' that's taking America by storm". You'd probably think "WTF?!?" - and that's EXACTLY what I think several times a week here at Slashfood.

It's like Jackie Harvey writes half the articles here!

The s'mores and chocolate caramel are decent, but the vanilla and pudding are off-putting and the brownie batter literally tastes like how an outhouse smells. Honest, the brownie batter skittle truly one of the single worst things I've tasted in years. Utterly putrid.
