McDonald's is really reaching now. They're in the process of converting hundreds of their restaurants into feng shui havens to create soothing environments for their customers. The first restaurant to undergo the transformation is, where else? Los Angeles.
Feng shui is a philosophy that manifests in very specific arrangements of space and arrangement of objects. In this first McDonald's with a feng shui environment, earth tones, plants, and running water replace the circus red and yellow of old.
So you can relax while you're throwing down a couple of Big Macs now.

McDonalds replaced the "circus of red and yellow of old" with green, brown, dull color of choice nationwide already. So doing those Starbuckian colors in a feng shui environment only confirms the theory that McD execs have officially lost their minds.

I live near the new McDonalds. Hacienda Heights is a predominantly Asian suburb, that's probably the reason the first one is opened there.
You put a monkey in a suit and it's still a monkey. A new design doesn't change the fact they're serving cardboard burgers.

This is odd considering the stores were designed to be less than comfortable so customers would hurry up and get out to make room for the next rush. I haven't been to a McDonald's in years, maybe it's a slower atmosphere now...

why don't they spend their money making real food? all the feng shui in the world won't change the fact that their product sucks and has the same nutritional profile as poison.

I'm really surprised they haven't done this sooner with the popularity of coffee shops and more leisure-dining chains around. The issue they'll have is the perceived slowness of that environment. Starbucks, even if their coffee service is 3 minutes from start to finish, seems more relaxed and people tend to move slower, take their time reading the menu, and generally poking around longer which will hamper the McDonalds business model. I like the idea, I just don't think it's going to revamp every store.

There is one of these already, in NJ. South Amboy to be more specific. I work close to it, could send pictures if someone wanted.
