Multi-Tasking Food Tips

A few weeks back, AOL Food rifled through cabinets and plundered the fridge to find edible multi-taskers like peanut butter (it'll get gum out of the carpet) and cornstarch (makes messy sneaker lace knots manageable) for our Weird Household Uses for Food Gallery. We asked readers to share their best tips in the accompanying blog thread, and were so thrilled by the response that we've posted a follow-up gallery to highlight some of our favorites. (Seriously -- who knew mayonnaise could do all that?) Flip through it to find some innovative ways to save cash, sanity, and your brand-new carpet.

Take a hot shower to rinse out. This leaves hair silky and shiny for several days. (I know as a synchronized swimmer- my hair never looks better than after a swim meet)

A picnic with bowls of milk sitting around with dead flies in them doesn't sound like the kind I'd like to be at. Mayonaise that is unrefrigerated or spoiled can cause food poisoning. Not sure I'd want to be spreading that bacteria around on my furniture and cds to hands that will spread it further. That is right that onions are toxic to pets.

In a cooking pot or pan that has hardened or burned food, Boil water with a couple tablespoons of baking soda OR vinegar to get rid of burned on food. You may need to scrape at paricularly difficult spots while the water is boiling, but it sure beats endless scrubbing with steel wool.

One I didn't see on the list was the use of cloves to deaden toothache pain until you can get to the dentist. Cloves will numb you right up!

If you are tired of athletes foot...Just run about an inch of warm water in your bath tub then add about 1/2 cup of pine-sol and put your feet in for about 3 minutes......that should get rid of it for good.....No follow up.....No pain involved....feels the same as only warm water would feel.

I learned this from a couple who have a fruit & vegetable stand years ago in Tucson, Az.. where they can make your life outside miserable. Just be sure to warn people not to touch because that can be more miserable.

Also, Hydrogen Peroxide gets blood stains out of carpet or clothes too! And when your pet comes in from the rain, just take a dryer sheet and dry them off with it, plus it will make them smell better. I also use Dawn Dishwashing Liquid in my wash to clean the grease out of blue jeans that my husband wears, if they are like totally saturated in grease, you can soak them in a five gallon bucket of one liter coke for thirty minutes, then wash them in the wash with Dawn, This really cuts the grease! I also use the plastic grocery bags to cover my head when coloring my hair, that way I don't get my towels covered in coloring. I could go on, I have lots of tips. It comes from trying things out of necessity. Next time you have to change a broken light bulb, cut a potatoe in half, push the flat cut side down toward the socket until the remainder of the glass and base are securely stuck into the potatoe. Slowly turn counter-clockwise until the base is free from the socket then simply throw the whole thing away. You're now ready for a new lightbulb!

Also, if your brown sugar becomes a brick, cut an apple in half and place it with the brown sugar in an air tight container. Mine worked overnight and was soft as new the next day.

Because margarine is so close to being plastic instead of margarine it's unreal. I left some margarine out for days and there was not one bug in it. I put it in the middle of an ant parade and the ants disappeared in minutes. I now eat that high cholesterol butter.

Clean minor wounds and scratches with Peroxide, then place a little bit of honey on the wound, then bandage with a bandaid or gause, then leave it for 3 or 4 days and the wound should be healed. Germs do not grow in a sweet atmosphere, also honey prevents the wound from sticking to the bandage as you remove it.
