All this bad beef makes me want to swear off red meat

Alright. That's it.

First we hear that the USDA has recalled 143 million pounds of beef, then that the recall extends as far back as two years. Now this news: a fourth herd of cattle in Minnesota has tested positive for bovine tuberculosis. Maybe I'm just overly sensitive to bad beef now. Though it is unlikely that humans can contract tuberculosis from beef because "any animal showing these signs is withheld from the food supply. In addition, adequate cooking destroys the bacteria. Further, the milk pasteurization process at processing plants destroys any potential bacteria," still, it makes me wonder if I should just swear off red meat for a while.

I'm just going to think about that while I finish the last few bites of my steak.

2-21-2008 @12:01PM unclejerr said... I had to swear myself off of it about 10 yrs ago when I found out I had gout. For the most part I'm read meat free but occasionally I'll have a small hamburger if friends are cooking out. I'm just waiting for the bird flu or something that's going to make chicken bad for me before I become a full on vegaterian.

2-21-2008 @1:12PM Barry said... It's the factory "farming" of animals that's the real problem in all of these cases. If everyone was able to shop like Patrick above, there's be relatively few if any of these problems.

2-21-2008 @7:56PM michael said... I have. I've been leaning that direction for a while, but the recent news of the horrors of slaughterhouses have pushed me over the edge. I'm done with it.

I think if I could be assured that my meat came from a place that was organic, grass-fed and humanely-treated animals, I might make an exception, but it would need good documentation. As for ordering beef in a restaurant... forget it. I'm done.

2-22-2008 @9:25AM Jon said... Like Patrick, I also get grass-fed beef from a farm within driving distance. It's more expensive, so as a side effect I've started eating less meat, which magnifies the health benefits.
