The video of the cattle abuse was disgusting. But what's worse is this meat packer was using "downer" cattle, the ones who are too sick to stand on their feet. Falling down is one of the signs a cow is infected with late stage BSE (aka Mad Cow disease).

The case for a healthier and more sustainable food system could not be clearer in light of this record recall. The combination of cruelty to animals and dangerous food is not isolated; it is endemic in a system that prizes profit above all else. The filth of factory farms has no place in a healthy society and should be replaced by family-scale farms and organic farming standards.

This is a shame but it even happens to house pets and that does not make the news. However people do not relize that a down cow also means one that cannot get up after giving birth due to a pinched nerve or had tourn her insides. The news makes it sound like a down cow is one that HAS to be sick. THE NEWS NEEDS TO START GETTING THIER FACTS ALL INORDER AND STOP SLAMMING THE AMERICAN FARMER.

Cassie - this news isn't about bashing farmers at all. It's about the horrible way in which the slaughterhouse conducts quality control and how they treat animals that should be further inspected before being processed. None of the news reports that I've seen (and I've read a lot about this incident) bash America's farmers in any way. Most of the news has focused on the poor conduct of the processing company and the inadequate oversight that the few government inspectors are able to provide.

Jeff's comments about "factory farms" are out of order because this problem didn't take place at a farm at all. Replacing large farms with lots of small ones won't address the issues in this recall at all. Jeff's problems seem to be with making a profit which is just silly. Farmers, both large and small, have every right to earn a living by making a profit on what they produce. Large farms can produce healthy cattle or other crops; and, if you look at the record of the industry they do. Remember that the e-Coli scare of last year was the result of the produce comnig from organic farms in California. Both the owners of large farms and small can learn a lot from each other.

DEAN~ However, where you dont relize is that with all this know us as farmers are going to lose money(less then we are already making) because people as consumers are not going to want to buy beef because they think ALL slauterhouses treat their animals this way. So thats where us farmers will be hurt!!

Walk in a everyday farm large or small animals get a "spanking" because they dont mind their boss. If we let a 1500+ animal walk all over us we are indangering our lives.

You also dont hear on the news about a "beast" a.k.a. bull or cow almost killing a human for just walking into the pasture do we.

I agree as a farmer their are boundries and yes they crossed them however a "down" cow has many meaning NOT just sick. I come from a state where they do NOT accept animals like that. They have to walk off the trailer before we can leave. I AGREE its sad but then again an animal dying is part of life and the food chain. SURVIVAL OF THE FITIS

This is one of the reasons I avoid all beef when eating out and cooking at home. I've heard far less scares about fish and chicken, though that could be because the media doesn't cover it as much.
