Super Bowl Week: Crockpot Cereal

crockpotSo this day is dedicated to food that is served in bowls (bowls...Super Bowl...get it? Ha!), and what is the ultimate bowl food? That's right, cereal!

I had planned to do a series of posts where I mix two different kinds of cereal and then review how they taste together. But I forgot to buy the cereal last night and all I have in the cupboard is Crispix and All-Bran Complete Wheat Flakes, and it's not worth doing if that's all I have right now. So how about we find some cereal recipes from around the web? Starting with this Crockpot Cereal, which takes a while to make but sounds like it would be really comforting on cold winter days.

And yes, there's nothing wrong with having cereal as a meal.

Crockpot Cereal

1 tablespoon butter
Cereal: oatmeal, cracked wheat, cornmeal grits, or similar cereal (do not use quick cooking cereals)
water
salt
chopped apples, cinnamon, nuts, raisins, or your favorite add-ins

Rub crock wall with butter. Follow package directions for quantity of water and salt per cup of cereal. (Most varieties of cereal work best using a 2-1 ratio: 4 cups water to 2 cups cereal.) Cover and cook on LOW 8 to 9 hours.
About.com suggests some variations on the above recipe, including cream of wheat and cocoa and cream of wheat and peanut butter chips.

My crockpot's stoneware bowl (insert?) developed a crack and I don't think it's safe to cook anything in it anymore. So either I need to find a replacement bowl or I need to buy a new crockpot. Either way, no crockpot dishes for me. :-( And in the middle of winter too.
