Looks like super mega ultra ginormous Starbucks isn't feeling so big and powerful these days. They are testing the sales of $1 cups of coffee that also include free refills in some stores in Seattle. Though Starbucks just recently raised coffee prices across the board, it seems that this testing is a response to stiffer competition from lower-priced coffee at fast food chains. McDonald's, Dunkin Donuts, and other companies sell their coffee for just over a dollar.
That's nice of Starbucks to price-match, but even if the $1 test passes and is expanded across the entire business, I doubt I would go into Starbucks. I actually prefer McDonald's coffee.

Since they support Fair Trade and organically grown coffee, and are behind Earthwatch loans to impoverished farming communities, I've always thought they've treated coffee farmers very well.

After they're done with it, charcoal.

And that's in addition to the fact they pay more than the market price for all the coffee they buy, setup C.A.F.E. practices to help sustain coffee farmers in the long run, and give coffee farmers access to credit when they need it and help out their communities.
Quite frankly, I think Starbucks does a lot for a "big evil" coffee corporation. I took all of this from their CSR report they put out every fiscal year, http://www.starbucks.com/aboutus/csrannualreport.asp

I like espresso and I drink drip coffee, neither of which I take with milk usually, but Starbucks coffee tastes too burnt to enjoy without milk. Really, I mainly just like their lattes, but those would not be cheap under this new pricing.

When you Starbucks lovers go in for your morning coffee, take a look at the beans. They should look oily and glossy, but they never do at Starbucks. And their "premium" coffee is a mix of burned and unburned beans. For how much money that place rakes in every day, you think you'd be able to get a good tasting cup of coffee.

McDonalds serves the cheapest, least fresh, worst brewed most horrible coffee there could be.
I'd any day spend $1-$5 for Starbucks over even $.50 coffee from MDs

They aren't that much cheaper, but they taste pretty darn good. I think I average about $35.00 a week on espresso drinks. Honestly I usually buy from Starbucks, but lately I've felt a little bit guilty about spending so much on a cup of Java being on a fixed budget(being a full time college student I need the pick me up). I know that Starbucks is making a mint on consumers and that is why they can afford to have so many employees. It's great that they hire a large number of workers and even give their part-timers insurance, but that has to be due to their high prices don't you think? I think that when I tip it's out of obligation. But I have noticed a trend lately in many establishments putting out tip jars on counters! Here is a little 411; I tried the McDonalds hazelnut iced coffee...not to bad, try it! But Don't try Burger Kings Mocha Joe, it's like drinking a "chocolate milk shake on speed" plus it has killer calories!
