Today is the day that we're feature main dish foods appropriate for the Super Bowl and so it seems like a good time to look at some of the star foods that come out of New York and explain why they are so vastly superior to those items on offer in the New England area.
Our star representative is New York pizza. It is so very much better than anything available in New England (or really in the rest of the country, but that's another post). One might even say that New York pizza is the Platonic Ideal of pizza. Growing up in Portland, OR we had a pizza place called "Escape from New York Pizza." There was no pizza trying to escape from Boston. Additionally, the premiere pizza site in the blogosphere, the beloved Slice, comes out of New York. Need we say more?
I'm going to turn it over to you, our thoughtful and opinionated Slashfood readers. What are your favorite New York foods?

Yum! No Pizza is anything like NY Pizza. There is a not so good trend in our Philly area to put Colby cheese instead of mozzarella on pizza...it is so terrible and greasy I do not understand why they do it.
Other NY favorite...bagels of course! The best bagels are in NYC and even some seriously good ones can be found in Westchester county, NY (ex NYers I am sure).

I've never had a pastrami or corned beef as good as they have at Katz's.

sounds like the new yorkers need to get off their narrowminded highhorse and try other pizzas before declaring it the best

I haven't had a half-decent slice of pizza since moving to Boston, which is very strange, considering that it has an Italian district (the North End) and is so close to NYC.
Pizza in the Midwest, especially Cincinnati's Deweys Pizza, is so much better that it's embarrassing.

I was just having this conversation with someone I work with yesterday, and we both agreed that you can't get a potato knish worth eating anywhere else in the country except New York.

Before I state my opinion, let me just explain that I'm from Boston but I've lived in NY and LA, and am now back in Boston...
So, NY definitely has amazing pizza, and LA definitely has great mexican food. But there are good pizza places in Boston (Upper Crust anyone?) and plus, that's not the point. Pizza isn't Boston's specialty, it's seafood. And I challenge you to find better seafood anywhere.

Pizzeria Regina anyone? I've had pretty good pizza in New York, but I'll gladly wait on the sidewalk in the rain to get into Pizzeria Regina any time.

Potato knishes, pizza, bagels, pastrami, bialys.
I'm sure there are more, but I can't think of them now.

Pizzeria Regina is nothing. I'm a jersey native (10 mins away from the city) who is currently trapped in Boston until May. Pizza in NYC is so much better than anything you can get anywhere else. Also, bagels (I bought about 5 dozen last time I was home and froze them so I can have REAL bagels for a while) - everything in Boston is simply a roll with a hole in the middle. The only semi passable bagels in Boston are at Espresso Royale, and thats only if I havent had nyc bagels in such a long time that I don't remember how amazing they are. And oooh bialys, I don't even think they exist in Boston.

so... you all are forgetting that boston's specialty is not pizza or bagels, but seafood. and i dare you to find seafood any better than here.
secondly, for great bagels (and bialys) you need to go to kupels on harvard ave in brookline. and for pizza, try upper crust, their pizza is wonderfully flavorful, with nice thin crust.

Upper Crust is gross. The few times I got pizza there (I gave them more than one chance) my crust was nasty and soggy. Just being "thin" doesn't cut it, and it wasn't even that thin.
p.s. so... you're forgetting that this wasn't about what food is good in N.E... just what is amazing in the city.
