Chocolate is bad for you! It will make your teeth rot!Chocolate is good for you! It has natural compounds that benefit the heart and the brain!
With all the back and forth, it's about time for chocolate to be bad for us again. According to a new study out of the University of Western Australia, women who eat chocolate every day end up with lower bone density in the hips, neck, tibia, and heel, making them more prone to fracture.
Chocolate seems to affect the body's ability to hold onto calcium. Chocolate contains oxalate, a poisonous acid, which can reduce the calcium absorption; it also contains sugar, which has been linked to calcium excretion.
Maybe this means we should stop eating that nasty extra dark "healthy" chocolate and go back to "milk" chocolate. Milk has calcium, right?
Or maybe we shouldn't eat chocolate every day.

Hmm, but chocolate also contains caffeine and I thought caffeine inhibits calcium absorption as well (although that seems to change on a day by day basis too!).
I would have thought that anyone who eats enough chocolate every day to affect bone density has probably got a lot of other health issues too!

Actually dark chocolate is rich in epicatechin, an incredibly fantastic polyphenolic plant metabolite antioxidant. It is great for the brain and skin.
As a small dietary supplement (beware, as it does contain a potent amount of caffeine) dark chocolate actually may lower your risk of stroke, heart failure, cancer and diabetes.
Dairy milk, however, inhibits the uptake of epicatechin and other beneficial antioxidants found in dark chocolate, thus negating any healthy side effects you might desire.
So, to thoroughly enjoy the benefits of dark chocolate, it should be consumed in small quantities with water or green tea... and milk should be avoided.
Milk chocolate does not have ANY beneficial side effects... unless you're looking to gain a muffin-top midsection.

dark chocolate has it's benifits, but your right, in large quantities its not very healthy, and milk chocolate isn't as good. its high in antioxidants(which is big on the health radar right now, and for good reason) and personally, the less sweet my chocolate is, the better. I sometimes melt unsweetend with a teensy bit of sugar and make my own chocolate bars. Yumm.

i think chocolates getting a bad rap! just stick with the facts about chocolate, we know it contains natural flavanols which are a heart healthy antioxidant! it might be a good to
watch out for biased opinions based on studys on the minorities. when the FDA releases a drug, they tell you up front that the drug has plenty of side effects. chocolate may not be perfect but guess what! nothing is! who really knows what the people in the study had going on with their physiology

Actually Chocolate contains no caffeine. However, it does contain a stimulant in the same family as caffeine, known as Theobromine. Theobromine occurs only in Cacao. The two stimulants are related and have a similar structures, but are very different chemicals with different properties, effects and origins. There are of course, some Chocolate products that have added caffeine, but it does not occur naturally in Chocolate.

I think what people need to realize is that when people say that "chocolate" is good for you, what they really mean is Cacoa is good for you. The chocolate that most Americans know of is filled with preservatives and high fructose corn syrup. Cacoa beans is really where the good stuff lies. If you go into a supermarket, you cant even find real chocolate without any sugar in it (and i dont mean sugar free).

hmmm... It does seem to go back and forth. But I'll say, eat chocolate whether it be dark or milk chocolate. a little bit won't hurt you and people just love it. I don't think it's a good idea to eat it every single day,it's bad for the teeth and filled with Theobromine a caffeine which if you eat too much you'll be bouncing on the walls lol. I love both chocolates but favor dark chocolate more, I hear it's good for your heart so it's better for me,lol. If chocolates really does absorb calcium then you should only eat it sparingly like when your on a diet you only eat it form time to time. Please understand that chocolate isn't a three meal course, it's candy that should be eaten as a snack or a way of treating yourself to some special occasion,or even if you just love the damn chocolate.
So once again, eat the damn chocolate but not all the time!
