We don't know why we're feeling especially green this weekend, but we were tickled when we came across news that Safeway, the nation's third-largest grocer, announced that it will convert its entire fleet of trucks to run on biodiesel. This will reduce Safeway's carbon emissions by 75 millions pounds each year. The move is just another step in the grocery chain's full-scale initiative that executives call their "green energy tree." The program includes recycling, energy efficiency, and using sustainable sources of fuel like solar power in stores and now, biodiesel based on soy in their 1,000 trucks.

Before they spend tens of thousands of dollars per store installing solar panels in their markets, how about if they spent a few hundred per store installing skylights? I'm all for using solar electricity, but the energy they would save by using more skylights would easily outweigh the energy they would generate using solar panels (unless they're using the most efficient sun tracking ones: http://www.soliant-energy.com/products.php ), and would be a lot cheaper. Conventional panels would hardly off-set the electrical load from their store lighting.

This is fine but there's no real conversion to the trucks that's necessary other than putting the biodiesel into the tank...
