As a company, once you find a marketing strategy that works, you usually stick with it. Nike had the swoosh, milk has the mustaches, and PETA? Well, they have naked women.Over the years, PETA has used women celebs like Alicia Silverstone, Eva Mendes, and Cindy Crawford to encourage the masses not to wear fur or eat meat. And while they've gotten a lot of flak, they continue to pay women to drop trou for the good of the animals.
Today in Philadelphia, PETA's "lettuce ladies" (women wearing little more than lettuce-shaped undergarments) will be handing out soy turkey sandwiches to promote the company's "Turn over a new leaf: go vegetarian" campaign.
A few points that should be noted, here: PETA rarely uses men to advertise its messages. It did use MTV Jackass' Steve-O, who was nude, but the ad a) only showed his backside and b) was quite obviously in jest, poking fun at the typical oversexed PETA model and keeping in vein with the show's brand of humor. Casey Affleck and Joaquin Phoenix have also done commercial spots for the organization - fully clothed. Somehow, I wonder if the effectiveness of the message is lost when we're too busy ogling Pam Anderson's generous chest to worry about what she's promoting.
Now, I'm all for soy products, either as meat replacements or as an addition to a healthy diet. Isn't it fascinating how, in campaigning to stop exploiting one living thing, another is exploited in its place? Maybe PETA should stop pointing its fingers at others for a second and turn the magnifying glass on itself.
Food for thought.

It burns me up that PETA cares more about a few people wearing fur coats than the THOUSANDS of HEALTHY animals being killed in animal shelters in this country -- simply because there are not enough homes for them! Why doesn't PETA harrass and hassle the morons who refuse to spay and neuter their dogs and cats??? What a concept.

I would advise you to go to youtube and watch Defending Peta..it tells about when they are able to get to an animal it is too far gone to save it. It is a HUMANE thing to do. You people that choose to eat rotting flesh it is your business. Your death too. Even the higher intellagent animals don't eat meat. Then I see alot of lower intelligent animals by this blog still are. Check out the web site at PETA.org and meet your meat and then talk about how tasty a steak is. It is flesh. Cannibels. Ugghh! I am so glad I live in California where I have so many options to meat products and dairy. Naked woman. Watch The Girls Next Door and they are walking around naked all the time. Is is trying to prove a point which you all so stupidly miss. These reponses just make me digusted with people like yourselves. Eating animals is not funny at least not the way they are killed. You should watch how they live and die than make an educated comment.

For some reason there are a fair amount of people on this planet who feel by killing and eating plants they are more virturous and their anatomy more adequate. There are many people who feel that eating plants is just ok--but I guarantee if you were educated enough to know what really goes on before these innocent carrots are put on your tables, the majority of you would not eat them. But most of the people on this planet have no idea and are happy to go to their grave not knowing---continuing the cycle of ignorance. And how ignorant of you who make fun of the people who care for all the vegitation on this planet. It only confirms the fact of what a pitiful race man has become and one of the many reasons we're in the state we're in. I'm middle aged and have always loved people, but now the more I see of people the more I like pigs because of such comments as I have just read. I will never come to this site again and could care less what happens to any of you who are so uncaring. You see, uncaring brings only more uncaring. As an after thought PETA is nothing but a bunch of people who are so bored with their lives that they must find a way to impress their skewed opinion on the rest of the world. Get a life, eat a steak.

I have and its not a pretty sight and its because of over population. If it wasn't for our forefathers years ago that hunted and trapped we wouldn't be here now. Of course most people that are involved in Peta are city folks or eat plants or fish. Of course fish don't count do they? Well they should be

So you assume that the only people who are eating meat are those unaware of the truth in the meat industry? Ridiculous. I know full well all of horror stories out there, but that doesn't matter to me. Because at the end of the day, I'm an animal too - and eating meat is an extremely natural part of the lifestyles of many animals. Yes, I understand that unlike wild tigers or bears or whatever we as humans have the option to abstain from this natural course of action, but I see no legit reason to do so.
And as far as how the animals in the meat industry are handled - I do prefer to get more "humanely" treated animal meat when possible (smaller farms and such), but at the end of the day it doesn't matter to me at all whether the animal I'm eating had a happy life or not. Sorry. It's the food chain - and we're as naturally a part of it as any other animal.

This post touched a nerve with me and I’m glad it came about. I have huge problems with the way PETA markets the cause of animal rights – especially its sexist campaigns like the Lettuce Ladies.
In response to Kent, I guess the technical definition of "exploit" is to use selfishly or unfairly for your own advantage, and it's true that the women were likely paid to be in the ad campaign, or are volunteering for a cause they believe in. But just because individual women were OK with being in the ad doesn't make the concept of the campaign right.
I think the point of the post was that the ads de-humanize women. Objectification - viewing people as de-personalized things of desire instead of individuals with personalities and intelligence - is a huge problem in our society.
Take, for example, Lewis and Jason's comments above, as they judge the women in the ads, implying that the women are not attractive enough to wear certain things. They feel totally comfortable passing judgement on them. Ads that objectify women feed into a culture that accepts that behavior.
I totally agree with Ellen that PETA should not get away with this type of campaign just because it is pro-animal rights.
