Playing favorites in the kitchen

a yellow dansk soup pot
When it comes to my pots and pans, I don't like to play favorites. I don't want my cast iron skillet to think that it is any less loved than my giant stock pot or the 8 inch non-stick saute pan that I always use for eggs (I realize this might sound a little nutty, but go with me here). However, there is one pot that I love above all others in my kitchen. That yellow Dansk pictured above is my very favorite vessel for small batches of soup, steaming bunches of broccoli and boiling up two servings of pasta (it also makes a mean batch of fondue). I also love the way it looks on my turquoise stove from 1966, cheery, bright and ever so vintage.

Do you have a favorite kitchen item? It doesn't have to be only a cooking vessel, it could also be a bowl, spoon, cutting board or knife (to name a few possibilities). Add your pictures of your favorite stuff to our Flickr pool so we can see your beloved objects.

This spoon was always right where we could see it because she used it every day to stir her big pots of soup or sauce. We never actually got hit, the threat of the wooden spoon was more than enough to keep us in line. The spoon was my great grandmother's who passed it down to my grandmother who has since passed it down to me. It is so warn from use but it is still my favorite thing to stir my big pots of soup and sauce.

I've cooked all kinds of food in it over the years, some that would be recommended and some that probably wouldn't.

It's cookware with a lot of emotional freight for me. I remember her using it when I was a kid for pot roast, and I was frankly astonished that she gave it to me, since she wasn't much one for giving her stuff away. It's coming up on the first anniversary of her death, and making that soup in this pot the other night really brought her back for me.

I should do a pot roast in it soon.

Okay, overshare finished.

(Close runners-up include my chef's knives, cast-iron chicken fryer, and stand mixer.)

I admit I'm pretty partial to my bullet blender -- protein shakes every morning are now a breeze. But, for a tried and true "vintage" kinda thing, it's a Beatrix Potter themed kiddie food dish which has been our family butter dish for decades.

It was a baby food dish used by each of my siblings and me, and when we no longer needed it, my dad added a stick of butter to it one day, and used it as a butter dish ever after. I remember demanding of when I was a teen, as a typical rude teen would do,"Gawwwd Dad, can't we get a REAL butter dish?" His eyes got round and he said "Oh noooo, I love seeing this every morning. It reminds how I used to feed you before having to leave for the office. I still love seeing this little bunny dish." I was properly chagrined and we used it ever after without complaint, and I still do. I miss ya, Dad.

I keep it as a display piece on my 50's Wedgewood stove. It NEVER gets put away.
