Speaking of fast food, we feel the need to take this moment and talk about burgers, and not just burgers, but a new burger that will be showing up on the Wendy's menu next year. It's the Philly Style Hoagie Burger, created by Ian Van Camp when Wendy's put out a challenge to the people to create a burger this past Spring.
Now, we're going to try to judge, but really, whom are we kidding? We're Slashfoodies and we're a little bit opinionated about food, particularly when it comes to piling salami and ham onto existing two -- not one, but two -- burger patties. Really? Really?
Now, we aren't saying that Ian's creation is a bad one. In fact, we are quite tempted to go out in the December weather, fire up our grills, and make this burger ourselves for our next Holiday BBQ, but really? Was salami and ham the most creative burger that we could come up with when there are far more interesting things to put on a burger like deep fried onion rings or in the burger to global-flavor-ify it like soy sauce? Of course not! There had to have been hundreds of thousands of entries, so does that mean the voting public chose the Philly Style Hoagie Burger?
The real question is, are salami and ham ingredients in a Philly Style Hoagie Burger?!?!
We are perplexed, but will re-visit when we see the burger on the menus.

The salami is a bit unorthodox, but I'd be about as tempted to stack salami on a hamburger as I would tuna fish or scrambled eggs...which is to say, **not at all**. A burger that's actually different AND appetizing would be cool That, however, would mean eliminating all use of Swiss cheese, pepper jack cheese, BBQ sauce, ranch sauce, cheese sauce, bacon, ham, sauteed onions and mushrooms, etc.--all of which are on the usual suspects list for "new" fast food burgers with non-traditional ingredients. How 'bout a shawarma-style burger with a toasted rustic bun smeared with roasted garlic? Or one with artichoke hearts and Roma tomatoes? Something, in other words, that's kind of original, but not horrible-sounding?

What I want to know (obviously nutrition is not a huge factor to me) is what ever happened to the "hot and juicy" original Wendy's burgers that you had to have a dozen napkins to get through. All I know is soon after the "earthworm" roomers were flying years ago, the burgers changed. If it was earthworms that made 'em taste like they did - put earthworms in them!

I think it might be better with some nice sharp provolone cheese instead of the American "cheese". But I'd still try it. Probably would need some oregano, too.

(ps, #2... 'earthworm roomers'? I hope you meant 'rumors'.)

Also realized too late that there probably aren't many blogers old enough to remember the rumor or the way Wendys burgers used to be.

I entered the contest with a few creative entries that I think should have done really well. (maybe my opinion is biased here... hehe... but they were good ideas!) I had one idea that I called the "Gyro Hero" and it involved onions, tomatoes, tzaziki sauce, and was placed between a "pita" style bun rather than a regular hamburger bun. Another one I had was for a "Maui Wowie" burger which had grilled onions, grilled pineapple, provolone cheese and a teriyaki sauce/glaze.
Whatever though... i just think that Wendy's already had something in mind and then chose the one that closely matched their idea.

She was reminded by me that Red Wigglers(earth worms) were about $5.00 per pound.
Where do people come up with such outlandish ideas?

A Philly cheesesteak is sauteed chipped beef, onions, and wit' or wit'out cheese (Whiz) on an Italian torpedo roll.
Wendy's new burger may be tasty, but it won't ring our bell in Center City Philly, where you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a place to get a good cheesesteak.
Several years ago a hospital ran a full-page ad in the papers here that said "When the foods you're known for are Philadelphia cream cheese, cheesesteaks, and TastyKakes, it's a good thing there's Deborah Heart Hospital."

A Philly steak is meat, onions and wit or wit out cheese? No hun, I think a CHEESE STEAK is cheese and steak, wit or wit out onions.
And no, its not always cheeze wiz. It can be wiz, provolone or my favorite, a smooth, liquefied, melted white American.
As for this burger, hmmm. I guess if you're in Philly and order an Italian hoagie, thats where the salami comes in. So that part's not entirely wrong? Either way, I'll save my heart attacks for sweets and not eat a double burger with extra meat on top.

If I want a philly steak i will order a philly steak and if I want a burger thats what I want. Pleas fix your burgers.

They probably also thought about the shelf-life and how fresh the ingredients had to be to be considered edible, after which they went with what took the least effort to pile together.
