What's in your freezer?

Marisa's very full freezer compartment
Last night I had some people over for dinner. Despite the fact that I got a late start on the main dishes, everything turned out perfectly and a good time was had by all. The only slightly-embarrassing moment in the entire evening came when, before I could stop him, my friend's husband opened my freezer in pursuit of ice for his drink (I had forgotten to put any out).

The door open, he stood and gaped for a moment and said, " Who eats all this food?" I quickly tried to explain that I like to keep a fairly stocked freezer so that I can pull meals together easily. I also tend to have three or four varieties of nuts, some summer fruit and homemade chicken broth stashed away as well. He shrugged and said, "Often when you open our freezer, all you see in there is a bottle of Skyy Vodka."

The picture above is my very own freezer, complete with half a bag of Trader Joe's string beans, a pound of chicken legs from Whole Foods and more frozen chicken broth than you can shake a stick at. In return, I want to know, what do the rest of you have in your freezer? Please share the mundane the quirks as inquiring minds want to know (and be assured that they aren't all that strange).

In my everyday freezer I keep the stuff I use often. My basement freezer has the stuff I make in batch (like stewed tomatoes from my garden, homemade meatballs, etc) or leftovers to throw quick meals together.

My deep freeze in the garage is guarding my meats, breads, chocolates and green chiles -- all the expensive, can't do without ingredients.

Too meager for my tastes!

We use one for things like bags of frozen veggies and fruits for smoothies, ice cream, lemoncello, ice packs, leftover soup, marine fish food, chicken strips, etc. The other refrigerator freezer is used for pumpkin & squash purees, bags of frozen chili peppers, extra buns/bread, extra ice, snacks, and overflow from the chest freezer. The chest freezer contains about 1 cow, 2 pigs, 2 deer, 20 fish, 10 chickens, all of these in various states (sausage, steaks, chops, burger, whole, etc.).

Don't feel bad about being prepared! It often surprises my friends when I can throw together a dinner party for 8 with less than a day's notice because I don't have to take the time to go shopping for all of the supplies.

As some others have posted, I wish I had a bigger freezer or room in our house for a stand-alone freezer. Other than that, there's:
-various frozen veggies
-Jennie-O turkey burgers
-ground chicken
-ground sirloin
-pork loin
-cod filets
-2 LB bag shrimp
-chicken legs
-boneless chicken breasts
-pie crust
-phyllo dough
-Lean Cuisine
-this sorbet-like stuff I got from a friend. Her family lives in Arizona and sends is to her by the pound. I don't know the name but it's DELICIOUS.
-organic french fries
-Amy's Organic bean & cheese burritos
-bananas that have become too ripe but I'm too busy to make anything with, so in the quart bag they go
-limeade concentrate for emergency margaritas

98 percent of all households purchase ice cream, and here in the USA people consume more than 20 quarts of frozen dairy products per year on average.
I probably have two kinds of homemade ice cream and two kinds of store-bought ice cream in my freezer right now, along with frozen veggies, frozen meals, frozen ingredients like pumpkin and cranberries, veggie burgers, and tater tots.
And some quinoa flour.

4 individual size containers of chili. My recipe makes a ton of chili, so I just make it once or twice a year and then freeze in little containers.

1 large container homemade chicken noodle soup. For emergencies like when I am sick.

Various frozen veggies, various frozen fruits. Some cans of juice concentrate.

1/2 roll of shortbread cookie dough. Just defrost, then slice and cook.

1/2 bag frozen chicken

1 lb of applewood smoked bacon

Bulk cheeses (parmesan and mixed shredded cheese) portioned into individual containers

1 small box homemade chocolates hand dipped chocolates. Mmmmmm.

My freezer contains a bag of potstickers, some egg rolls, frozen tomato juice, polish sausages, country ham, a pork loin, cornish hens, venison, Steamfresh veggies (the corn is best), frozen spinach, various frozen stocks, my husband's ice cream and a whole bunch of frosty mugs and pilsners. Occasionally a jar of moonshine.

In my freezer (now, and normally):
- 2 containers of Edy's slow-churned ice cream
- tons of frozen peas
- frozen cauliflower & edamame
- Alexia fries
- pierogi
- Chinese dumplings
- 1 lb ground beef
- frozen skinless chicken breasts
- Trader Joe's chicken sausage (2 kinds)
- chipotle chilies in adobo sauce, frozen in ice-cube-sized chunks
- ice cube trays and ice
- homemade chicken broth
- egg whites waiting to be used
- rolls and hamburger buns
- Boca burgers

Currently in my freezer, but not usually on hand:
- phyllo
- 1 serving of homemade lemon ice cream
- tofu
- fudgesicles
- 5 (!) different batches of cookie dough (I'm giving everyone homemade cookies for the holidays)
- 1 lb butter (I bought more than I needed for the cookies)

Oh, and most of the time, the bowl of my Cuisinart ice cream maker. I'm not crazy about my fridge, as it's at least 20 years old and is pretty energy inefficient (it comes with the apartment) but I do like all the space.

I share an itty-bitty freezer with a roommate who can't cook, so her side is full of Lean Cuisine and Hot Pockets, while my side is full of frozen veggies and fruit from the summer, vast quantities of soup (chicken noodle, coconut butternut squash, lentil, etc.), a pint of butter pecan, a few frozen salmon steaks, a turkey breast, and a Cornish game hen or two. My boyfriend has a bigger freezer and also does not cook, so I've taken it over with more soup (I love soup), fifteen pounds of frozen Michigan cherries, and a number of homemade casseroles and pot pies for when neither of us wants to cook.

A zillion containers of frozen left overs that can make another meal (meatballs and sausage, pot roast, smothered porkchops)These left overs are great for quick meals or when I don't feel like fussing. I buy extra bread and keep in the freezer, popsicles, ice cream, frozen blueberries and other fruits, frozen veggies, frozen bagels, and pancakes and french toast (again, for quick breakfast). In the summer I buy lots of fresh veggies, cut them up and freeze them to use in the later months. If I make a cake (or get one) I cut it up in slices and put between sheets of waxed paper and then zip lock bags and I freeze it. You can then take one or two slices at a time and thaw for about 15 minutes and then eat. My freezer is all about fast, easy and convenient.
