Hot toddy: the quintessential winter warmer, and frequently mistaken as a cold remedy (alcohol, of course, dehydrates you - not what you want in a cold remedy - but, what the heck, it sure beats a tablespoon of Robitussin). Originating from Britain, the hot toddy is simply: - lemon
- hot water
- spirit of choice (Whiskey and brandy are the most popular, but Tuaca and other liqueurs work well, too)
- honey
Hot Buttered Rum: You can get the batter commercially, but where's the fun in that? For what it's worth, my mom was crazy about this drink, and so I have fond memories of this one. My mom bought the commercial batter, I think.
- 1 teaspoon brown sugar
- 4 oz hot water
- 2 oz dark rum
- 1 tablespoon butter

1 pound butter
1 pound brown sugar
1 pound confectioners' sugar
1 quart vanilla ice cream, softened
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
DIRECTIONS
Melt butter in a large pot over medium heat. Blend in brown sugar and confectioners' sugar. Remove from heat, and stir in the ice cream, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Pour mixture into a plastic container, seal, and freeze.
In a coffee mug, measure 1 tablespoon Hot Buttered Rum Batter and 1 fluid ounce of rum, then fill cup with boiling water. Stir, and sprinkle top of drink with nutmeg.

My really easy & tasty hot toddy recipe is to take a 12 oz. can of sweetened iced tea with lemon, pour the contents into a mug, add about a jigger (more or less) of 21-24 yr. old single malt scotch, preferably portwood aged, or a good rum, and microwave for about 1.5 to 2 minutes. Sit back, sip, and enjoy. Rare Tawny Port will also work well. Perfect for those evenings when you just want to mellow out before a good night's sleep.

I used two pints of softened Haagen-Dazs in the batter, and about 1 1/2 oz of dark Bacardi in the mug. I didn't put nutmeg on top before serving because it settled to the bottom of the mug. Really good special-occasion recipe, though...

mix together cinnamon and fresh grated nutmeg into room temperature butter. Chill well.
Drop a large pat of the butter mixture (to taste) into a cup of very hot cider.
Add cinnamon stick and serve. You can add rum flavoring if you want. The great part is that the kids can have a cup, too.

1 lb brown sugar (1 box)
1/4 lb butter (1 stick)
1/2 to 1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 to 1 tsp ground cloves
1/2 to 1 tsp ground nutmeg
a pinch of salt
thoroughly blend all these together, add a heaping tablespoon to a mug, add a shot of rum (I like dark rum), fill with boiling water and mix. Serve with a cinnamon stick, if you like.
By the way, make it with 151 proof rum, and it's a "Northwest Passage"
Use coffee instead of water, and it's a "Coffee Grog."
Happy holidays!

We used one very similar to this in the bar. We also used Vanilla Ice Cream in all our "FOO-FOO" drinks that called for cream! Of course, we all know there are NO CALORIES in these tasty treats!! At least this time of the year..... HOWEVER, if you want to cut calorie, I'd go with the old Trader Vic's recipe. Both of these may be used to spice up other drinks and deserts. Use your imagination. ENJOY, BE SAFE and have a VERY HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON!!!

glung in your rum to the carafe.....put in your butter..same carafe..use a filter and put in some powdered cinnamon.....the filter will keep it out of the carafe
pour in your apple juice..your ice tea...whatever ingredients you decide....let the heat warm it up and enjoy....alot simplier to me:)
