Need a little help with your grocery list?

the SmartShopper
One of the continuing joys of my life is the practice of making lists with pen and paper. It gives me a moment to get organized, I get the opportunity to firmly cross the items off the list once I've completed them and there's something so satisfying about looking at a slip of paper at the end of the day and knowing that you accomplished a series of tasks or errands. I especially love making grocery shopping lists because in addition to my previously discussed love of lists, I also love food. It becomes the merging of multiple loves and that just makes my day.

That was a long way of saying that I totally don't understand this gadget, the SmartShopper Grocery List Organizer that "alphabetizes and groups items by where they're found in the store." You pay $149.99 for the privilege of using this electronic list maker to do a job that a $.19 pen and a piece of paper could probably do just (if not more) effectively. Oh technology. You claim to make our lives better, but sometimes I wonder.

Have we really invented all possible useful gadgets that people are devoting their time and energy towards such senseless products such as the SmartShopper Grocery List Organizer? That too for $150, for a product that does a task which a pen and paper would do? Come on...

I bet even hardcore gadget freaks would shun this one like the plague. I know I would.

Mine is organized by the stores where I'll buy things and it has a column for the family to write down what they'd like to see for upcoming meals so I can add those ingredients I'll be needing to pick up. It does double duty as a supply list for errands as well and helps me plan the most efficient route as make my rounds.

I post it in the kitchen for a day or two before I go so people can add to it. So, it's half computer printed and half hand written.

I try to group items where they're found in the grocery stores but it's more a wish than something I can count on.

And I already group items by where they're found in the store (produce, frozen items, refrigerated case items, and dry goods). I guess not everyone is as "organized" (read: anal retentive) as me, but even so, this thing isn't worth the money. Now, a gadget that could scan my pantry and tell me what I'm almost out of... that would be valuable.
