Are you a supertaster?

A while back I heard that Doug over at Blogsoop had some Supertaster Tests that he was giving away to food bloggers. Being that I always wanted to know where I fell on the tasting scale, I got in touch with him and asked (very nicely) if there was any way that I could become one of the food bloggers to be gifted with a little white strip imbued with harmless chemicals. He said yes and sent me not one, but two white strips.

Scott and I decided to take the test in front the camera and what you see above is the result. Sadly, according to this test I am a non-taster, the strip didn't taste like anything to me. Scott found it to be incredibly bitter, thus determining that he is a Super Taster!

Most supertasters do not enjoy food because they can taste bitter flavors, off notes, and can't handle hot spices at all. They end up eating a bland diet and don't get to enjoy food, while regular tasters tend to enjoy food of all types and can focus on the good flavors in what they eat.

Sure, I don't care for certain foods and flavors, but I don't feel that it's stopped me from eating what I want, including hot spices (I don't recall those on the list, actually). I definitely do not stick with a "bland diet" and don't have to struggle to order when I go out.

I'm a bland man with super tasting abilities! Maybe that's why Marisa and I get along so well.

They are the people that are in QA that make sure the food you buy has all the organoleptic qualities that it needs to and the taste is consistent from batch to batch. Food Science needs more supertasters... there is a big market for people in sensory departments at a lot of the big companies.

I have a great taste for sensory evaluation and I also happen to love spicy food and coffee. Plus just by being able to taste the PROP(the chemical on the strip) does not mean you are a superstaster it simply means you are a taster or supertaster. Many more tests must be done to determine supertaster status.
