Happy National Bologna Day!

bologna sandwich

Does anyone eat bologna sandwiches anymore? I know there are different kinds of bologna and some are better than others, but the only bologna that I'm familiar with is the packages of Oscar Mayer my mom used to buy when I was a kid. Bologna sandwiches, chips, and soda was one of my staple lunches.

"My baloney has a first name, it's O-S-C-A-R..."

Today is National Bologna Day. Big Oven has several recipes, including Bologna Soup. Here's a recipe for Bologna Sandwich Spread. Or how about another old-time favorite from RecipeZaar, the Fried Bologna Sandwich?

I even had a special system. I'd nibble in slow circles, first getting the "crust," then traveling inward until I had nothing but a ragged circular "core", which I'd fold over and snarf.

...man, I was a weird kid.

Still a great lunch sandwich, loved by kids of all ages. Course, its basically a cold hot dog ... or a hot dog is basically a small wrapped piece of hot bologna depending on your point of view. The big advantage is a fried bologna sandwich lets out the grease, where a hot dog's skin hold it in.

just the opinion of a guy canning 20 qts of home made spaghetti sauce.

Heaven on earth, and if you have a summertime tomato even better, no lettuce! I like a good beef bologna or german bologna has a bit more seasoning.checked out the recipe blog and dont understand frying in oil the meat has enough fat in it to make its own!

Put in a toaster oven. As the bologna heats, the rind shrinks, and the meat forms a 'bowl', holding the cheese as it melts.

And voila! Cheese soup in a bologna bowl on toast.

Broil and the centres pop up like little hats and serve with mashed potatoes. Has anyone else had this? did my mom just make it up? Any insights appreciated - I do miss the little suckers.

There should be a thin layer of butter from crust to crust on each slice of bread... one piece of balogna on each piece of bread... yellow mustard swirled on each piece of bologna then one piece of american cheese... ahhhh... a perfect sandwich...as produced by my anal retentive mother...

Sometimes I eat it on whole wheat bread with mustard. And then again, I am so inclined to eat for breakfast fried with my scrambbled eggs. There are so many ways to eat it . . . I never tire of bologna.
