Coca-Cola researching Chinese herbal medicine

ChineseCokeBillboardSeems like Coca-Cola is coming full circle some 120 years after its invention by druggist John Stith Pemberton.

Well, sort of.

Yesterday the soft-drink giant unveiled the Coca-Cola Research Center for Chinese Medicine in Beijing.

Coca-Cola has set up a lab to experiment with new Chinese herbal flavors for Coke and other beverage products. It's the first international company to open such a facility at the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences. Coca-Cola plans to have its researchers develop beverages using Chinese herbal ingredients and formulas.

A Coca-Cola spokesperson had this to say "This collaboration will ultimately help us bring the insights and benefits of traditional Chinese medicine to consumers all over the world." And it should probably give them a bit more cred than Vitamin Water. Though to be frank, I'm not quite sure I'm ready for Diet Coke with ginseng.

Without cheap labor here the jobs will leave to another country like China or Mex. We need to accept the society we created. The reason I am here is because my father was asked to come here by the U.S. plantations to help with the economy and was provided a social security #-- there hence was born the automatic flocks of cheap labor and Companies like Coke established themselves in other countries to jump on the bandwagon. Now we protest cheap labor here and smile when we buy foreign products. Wake up America - stop the hate and start to think. I am an american and I support cheap labor here because it belongs in America not abroad.

After growing up and practicing in America, at 40 years of age, I came to China....where I work as a doctor doing acupuncture and Oriental medicine, as well as teach in universities ...in both Beijing and in our home village in HeNan Province. My opinion is that this is probably the healthiest thing that Coke has ever pursued. I have not seen any glaring human rights problems here ....and I see the very rich and the poor. One thing to consider is that this government, in the last 15 years, has effectively uplifted 1/5 of the world's population out of abject poverty and now they are set to be host the the Olympic Games in 2008. Coke, like Western drug companies, stands to make money. It is a required factor of motivation, alas. For example, if there were not a prospect of profit, there would never have been the research leading to the heart and high blood pressure medicine that so effectively has helped millions today.
That being said, Chinese herbs are also very powerful and you can become injured by taking certain herbs indiscriminately. I applaud Coke, and wish them luck and Godspeed.

From Made in China toys with lead pain to byproducts imported from China for pet food and killing our animals to tainted fish....is coca cola for real?

The Coke sold in other countries is also bottled semi-locally. It's far cheaper for Coke to ship syrup around the world than to ship bottles that are mostly full of carbonated water. This new deal doesn't mean that your Coke will be bottled in China, it means that Coke will use Chinese-inspired flavors. It's a marketing gimmick, not a threat to your way of life.

Why can't Coke provide the money to researchers here in the U.S> We have many Asian people here in the U.S. who could chose the proper chinese herbs for the Coke products they desire. I applaude the efforts of Coke to make a healthier products for people like me who do not consume sugar and high fructose corn syrup and artifical sweetners.
Contact Reflex Analysis provided by alternative health practioners would be able to help in the natural ingredients needed for this product also. I am a Massage Therapist looking to make people well naturally.
