Usually this days are "National This" and "National That," but here's one that includes the entire Earth.
It's World Vegetarian Day, and here's the official web site so you can figure out how to celebrate it yourself (besides eating vegetables and not eating meat). I'm not really up on the different types of vegetarianism (in fact, I'm not even sure if "vegetarianism" is a word). Aren't there different types? Some that don't eat fish or eggs? Some that don't eat plant life or something? I'm sure one of our readers can give a quick course in the comments.
October 1 is actually the start of Vegetarian Awareness Month.

Even then, I try to avoid the inevitable conversations that follow. I don't use it as a platform and avoid the self-righteousness that goes with some peoples announcements. And that is for precisely the same reasons as Garrett's post(s). I had a chip on my shoulder for a few years about it, then I grew up.
By the way, I can't think of a more controversial topic for a food site. Couldn't we just talk about politics or religion?

If I don't bring it up, I end up eating the iceberg lettuce salad because my host made beef wellington, but if I do, I can predict the conversation that follows:
"Oh wow, okay! Do you eat chicken?" (no, that's meat)
"You aren't one of those crazies that doesn't eat cheese are ya?" (no, I'm not vegan)
"You aren't going to be sick if I eat meat, are you?" (no, it's totally fine!)
"HA HA, YOUR BROCCOLI IS MADE OF PORK!!" (ha! boy, you sure got me that time!)

Why don't people want to know what the animal suffers through before it is slaughtered? I don't support torture. It's disgusting. If it were back to times when people hunted their food in the wild- well, that killed animal had a fair life. But nowadays, it's a factory world. Animals are treated like... well... robots...or nothings. People train themselves to be apathetic to this. And they train their children and society to be apathetic. I am one who chooses to see what's really going on, and say no to the torture. I respect animals. Just because they are not like us doesn't mean we should cage them up and cut off their beaks and tails and ignore their screams. Downright cruel.
So, I do eat organic yogurt. Organic practices are healthy and fair. I'll eat cheese, but I'm trying to ween myself off of it and switch to organic cheese. I stopped eating eggs until I got some organic ones this week. I stopped eating fish recently- because I hate seeing them gasp for air, and what tipped me over was the fact that oceans will be barren of consumable fish within our decade, due to massive over-fishing. I know people have found a way to raise them on a "farm", but all they do is keep them in swimming pools for their whole lives, swimming up against eachother. It's very harsh. I kind of understand honey being a problem. I want to check it out more, but I think it's because the bees aren't given a natural home, and maybe are put to work way more than they should. There's also a problem with their population dying right now.
So like I sad, I support all life. I love this earth and all the creatures we share life with. I want to be at peace with them and respect them. Ever hear of "I think, therefore I am Vegetarian"?
And humans have an amazing sense called Empathy, that happens in the frontal cortex of the brain. Lots of people nowadays have blurred it by giving in to advertisements, traditions, and authoritative figures telling them otherwise. Or just because their taste buds rule over their brain or heart.
Also, I need space in my day to eat all the anti-cancer foods like fruits, veggies and grains! Yay! (I love the way I eat)
Peace
