Amy Sedaris is one of my favorite performers, and she also happened to write one of my favorite cooking/entertaining books, I Like You. She was on Martha Stewart's show earlier this week (her second visit) and I unfortunately missed it. But thank God for the internet! Martha has posted (well, I doubt she posted it - I really can't see her sitting down and working the HTML and uploading pictures) a video of her appearance, where Amy and Martha each made cheeseballs.
Amy's was from her book. Lil' Smoky Cheese Ball sounds like the perfect appetizer for your guests, and very easy to make. Here's the video from Martha, and after the jump the full recipe.
Lil' Smoky Cheese Ball
2 cups shredded smoked Gouda cheese, room temperature
2 packages (8 ounces each) cream cheese, room temperature
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, room temperature
2 tablespoons milk
2 teaspoons steak sauce
1 cup toasted chopped walnuts or pecans
Crackers, for serving
Place Gouda, cream cheese, butter, milk and steak sauce in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a paddle attachment. Mix until well combined. Transfer mixture to refrigerator. Let chill overnight. Roll cheese mixture into a ball. Place nuts in a shallow dish. Roll cheese in nuts to fully coat. Serve with crackers.

This lady is hilarious. I read her book "I like you: Hospitality Under the Influence" from cover to cover and she had me laughing out loud a few times. Her recipes are pretty good too!

I love Amy. I loved her book. I loved her first appearance on Martha when they made the Lady Baltimore cake.
Now that I've fully expressed my love for Amy, I have to say that the "Lil Smoky Cheese Ball" sounds totally disgusting. Butter?!? SO not needed here.

My sister used to make something similar on christmas, except that chopped fresh parsley and slivered almonds were the topping. And of course, shaped like a pine tree :).
