Happy National Corned Beef Hash Day!

corned beef hash

I've had corn beef exactly one time in my life, about 20 years ago. I was over a good friend's house and his wife made it, and I thought I was going to be sick. Nothing wrong with the way that she made it, I just don't like corned beef (which I quickly discovered that night). The entire meal was a chore, trying to smile and talk while I'm chewing the corned beef a thousand times, afraid to swallow.

But don't let that story ruin your celebration of National Corned Beef Hash Day! Maybe you can try this recipe from About.com, or perhaps this one from HillbillyHousewife.com. Or just visit the Hormel site and buy some of the stuff in the cans.

I'll be celebrating the day by having pizza or chicken or something.

This stuff is so soft that you don't have to even chew it--terribly bland. I always doused the stuff with ketchup. I can't say I've ever had a craving for it, but it's a super cheap switcharoo for those on super strict budgets when one more package of ramen will drive you to go on a shooting spree.

Fried potatoes, fried onions and fried chunks of genuine corned beef thats distinctly beefy and has that cured meat flavor. So go out there and get some real corned beef folks and don't let canned imitations throw you off. Likewise, don't judge a leg ham from a can of SPAM.

Bob, your post sucks because it's negative. Why even bother posting it's national corn beef day if you're going to knock it. I think it would have been better if you just announced it, showed a few links to recipes and kept your biased opinion to yourself.

I could just picture the 'I REALLY don't want to eat this, but i'll pretend i like it' face he must have been wearing. give him a break, people, it was informative, had links, and gave his thoughts on the subject. Isn't that what blogging is about?

The "food holiday" feature is a daily feature, and I can't promise I'll like every single food that is being celebrated, but that doesn't mean I shouldn't let readers know about it if they want to celebrate the day.

My recipe (of sorts) is here.

But I feel that your posts are CONSTANTLY delivered the same way-- and often about you not liking something you tried once or not even at all--Amber, it's definitely about the poster if s/he wishes to put in personal experiences and thoughts into the writing.

Again I ask you, Bob: what DO you like? what DO you buy???

Take half tin and first fry fzn hash browns and a half chopped onion.Let the potatoes and onion fry to a nice crust a couple times then add the beef, push to side of pan and fry two eggs over easy .. add good bread toast, jam, salsa, coffee and oj -- great for hangovers, switch the oj to a bloody mary --enjoy

Kind of like how a lot of kids will turn up their noses at "real" mac and cheese, having only had the Kraft version their entire little lives .

And can I say that *real* corned beef hash is EXCELLENT! Man... I want some now!

I have never had the real kind, and I hate the canned stuff but for some reason always seem to buy some. Probably because it is 2 cans for a dollar. Then about once every 6 months I will be looking for something to eat, see a can of hash in the pantry and think "Hmmm, that looks like a great idea, hash, I LOVE hash, don't I?". Then I open the can and it's the same old thing.

Today as I started cooking it my husband came in the door "Whatcha cooking?" standard reply "dog food, again." He laughs and says sarcastically "That smells great!"

Well, at least I know it will be a long time before I forget how nasty this stuff is and try it again.
