There's this theory that chicken is "boring." I don't know where this came from. I happen to think it's a very versatile food, right up there with pasta as to the number of ways you can prepare it. In fact, if I were to keep track of everything I ate during the year, chicken would probably be at or near the top, right after chocolate and pizza.
September is National Chicken Month, and this is one of those very rare occasions where there's a web site to celebrate! Take a look at NationalChickenMonth.com and check out the recipes and contests and products to buy.
AllRecipes has a good selection of dishes, as does Better Homes and Gardens. Don't forget to browse our poultry category as well. Lots of good recipes and links there.
And after the jump, video of Family Guy's Peter fighting a guy in a chicken suit. Three times.

Commercially raised chickens are arguably the most abused animals on the planet. Have you any idea the suffering that chicken endures before it lands on your plate? I suggest you do some research, because I have visited a commercial chicken "farm" and the abuse that goes on there is enough to make a compassionate person die a little inside. Happy Chicken month, indeed.

Thank God I'm not compassionate. Why, just last night, with absolutely no remorse, I was unbelievably brutal to an entire bushel of potatoes. Literally flayed their skins off their flesh, with relish.

If we ever find out that plants "feel" things somehow, I wonder how many angry vegetarians heads will just explode.
But seriously, Tracy has a point; factory farm conditions are horrible for chickens. We do abuse these birds terribly. Perhaps National Chicken Month is a good time to think about how we should express our gratitude to the chickens--by, in this case, not inflicting horrors on them at farms.

Thanks God for the yard bird! Delicious in so many ways. The main thing I feed my family. Have been buying organic when I can and the taste is so much better.

have to say family guy, the most funny satire/cartoon on telly, and probably the most disturbing, but there needs to be something like that on telly!!!!
anyway, I thought I'd share my no fuss easy dinner in my post to tie in with you Americans and the fact that I have been house sitting (house and teenage boy sitting)....
anyways.... easy as filler uppper 20mins!
Chicken pieces (breasts if ya have to!, thighs are the best) about 1 per person + 1-3 depending on numbers,
Red Curry Paste (tablespoons) x Num Ppl ish
potatoes (agria/waxy) diced
coconut milk, 2-3 ppl = 1/2 can 4-6 = 1 can
kaffir lime leaves to taste
lime juice
chicken stock
olive oil
rice
water
salt
---
cook ya rice the way ya like it, and the rice ya like....
brown, well seal and and add colour to the chicken in the olive oil, thrown the curry paste in stir around a bit)
Chuck the potatoes in and stir.
whack in the leaves, the juice of lime and zest.
get it all sizzling and smelling great, if you want more spice chuck in some chilli now and and get those oils flowing!
after the flavor infusion, throw the stock in, you want it soupyish, so prob about 1 liter for 3 people. and let simmer for 20minish until potatoes& chicken are cooked.
Then add coconut milk, and heat till hot/warm
Serve with Roti and rice.
This is a quick good dinner or a make in advance and chill/freeze reheat dinner. and oh so so yummy

I'm with you, Tracy . . . but I think the first step is convincing meat-lovers how much better humanely raised animals taste, rather than berating folks for ignorance or a lack of compassion.
So, chicken lovers . . . truly humanely raised free-range organic chicken is so far beyond delicious (forget the unenforced package labeling). The bland chemical-soaked mealiness from Tyson can just kiss its butt! Heck, if you have even the tiniest of back yards, get an Eglu and a handful of chicks, and you're on your way to cheap, delicious eggs and meat. And it's fun!
Just don't name the chickens . . .
