Even with all the media surrounding peanut allergies in kids, peanut butter still remains tops when it comes to sandwiches. Newsday put the eternal question to the test with 11 kids and got the answer to "What is the best peanut butter?" They tested 16 brands of peanut butter including store brands like Trader Joe's and Whole Foods, and also controlled for crunchy and creamy preferences by testing them separately.
So who won out? As much as parents would love to have kids prefer natural peanut butters, national brand Skippy took first place in both creamy and crunchy categories, followed closely by Peter Pan and then Jif. For the full results, and more information about peanut butter in general, check out the Newsday article.

It's probably not so much that they naturally gravitate towards bad food (foodie original sin?? haha) but rather toward what they were/are served at home- the familiar. Kids will ALWAYS go for what they know and enjoy. It'd be interesting to do this test with children that have not had PB yet before in their life...wonder if the findings would differ?

RAPE SEED IS THE OIL ADDED TO PEANUT BUTTER. SO DON'T LET YOUR CHILDREN CONSUME ANY PEANUT BUTTER WITH RAPE SEED IN ITS INGREDIENTS, ALSO KNOW AS CANOLA OIL. CHECK THE LABLE. IT SHOULD SAY MADE WITH PEANUTS. NOT ANYTHING ELSE ADDED

When I was growing up, we switched from Skippy to Smuckers All-Natural (only natural peanut butter that was widely available way back then), and my sister and I weren't pleased at first. Didn't taste as sweet and all the oil sitting at the top prior to mixing looked gross. Within a year, I could no longer stand the sweet unnatural goop when I went to friends' homes - it already tasted like whipped chemicals to me, not peanuts, and I was just 10 or so. I still can't stand the fake stuff, even in peanut butter cups! I think what did the trick was when my mom put glops of the natural peanut butter on crisp tart apple slices (a treat my brain still thinks is weird, but my taste buds love). Try doing that with the fake peanut butter - for some reason, it's inedible.

Today's highly priced brand names don't have the same hearty flavor. So I have stayed with natural. Just salt added. I am fortunate in that there is a local PB factory just a couple of miles from my home. So I buy it by the bucket knowing that it is always fresh. I still have to make those cookies for the family.

It tastes much better than those with hydrogenated oils (trans fats which are unhealthy).
