I used to hate macadamia nuts with a passion. When I was a child and then a teen they just didn't taste right to me. Maybe it was from years of eating just cashews and pistachios and almonds all the time, I don't know, but I just didn't enjoy them at all.
Then I went to Hawaii in the 80's, and everything changed.
I tried some again and, I don't know if it was because of the setting or these macadamias were especially good, but I learned to like them. I don't eat them that much because they're high in fat and rather expensive (and cashews and pistachios and almonds are still my first choices for snacking), but my opinion of them is now a thumbs up.Today is National Macadamia Nut Day. Here's a recipe for Macadamia Nut Chewies with White Chocolate, and here's one for Macadamia Nut Chocolate Kisses. How about a some Macadamia Brownies? They're also good added to Rice Pilaf.
And remember: don't feed them to your dogs!

I still can't tolerate macadamia nuts anywhere but buried in cookies--I'm a pecan guy. But I have fond memories of my father taking leftover macadamias and scattering them in the driveway, then all of us watching as every squirrel in the neighborhood congregated to devour them! In retrospect it probably woulda been more cost-effective to just use peanuts, but it was still a lot of fun to watch.

Yummy yummy. You know Everyone always says that they're cheaper in Hawaii but they appeared to be the same price to me when I went. They're just much easier to find.

the fat in macadamia nuts is the good kind, so not something to worry about (as long as you eat a reasonable amount for your metabolic rate)

I've always loved them. SO rich and buttery... A friend of mine grew up in Hawaii and told me tales of trying to crack the shells with a hammer on the driveway until his dad got miffed at the dings and dents in the cement. If I were independently wealthy and had an unlimited supply of macadamia nuts I'd probably weigh 800 pounds!
