Grocery shopping confessions

bags of groceries and someone's new sneakers
Aside from the occasional late-night trips down the grocery aisle at the CVS across the street from my apartment building, I am a fairly predictable grocery shopper. I tend to hit Trader Joe's at least once a week and then supplement those groceries with a trip to the farmers market or a local produce stand. On a weekly basis, the top 10 things you will almost always find me buying are yogurt, milk, cheese (I like my dairy products), tofu, quinoa, light coconut milk (a recent obsession), fruit (nectarines, plums and apples these days), grass-fed beef, arugula and tomatoes (not a very titillating list I'm afraid). Of course, there's always loads more coming in and out of my kitchen than that (I'm a person who buys a new variety of salt nearly every month) but those are the basics.

What are the 10 things that you find yourself buying most often? Snack foods? Bread and peanut butter? Kraft singles? Share the dirty details of your grocery bags.

Do none of you have kids? My top 10 items are Diet Pepsi, then 9 kid things. And normal food-not tofu cereal or organic soy goat milk or whatever crazy mixture of foods half of you put on your lists.

1) Skim milk-- We drink AT LEAST 2 gallons a week.

2)Whatever flavor of Kelloggs Frosted Mini Wheats strikes my fancy in a given week

3) REAL Oatmeal (hubby loves it; I could live without it)

4) Veggies (English cucumbers, grape tomatoes, baby carrots, red onions and various colors of peppers-- ANYTHING but green)

5) Coffee and Coffee Mate (Fat Free French Vanilla Liquid)

6) Skinny Cow Ice Cream Sandwiches-- these are UNBELIEVABLY good!

7)Seasonal Fruit (right now, it's BERRIES, but it will change to Granny Smith apples and Bosc and D'Anjou pears shortly)

8) Cheese (cheddar blocks, American slices, spreadable chevre)

9) Bottled water

10) Mountain Dew (in cans for work so I don't have to rely on the ubiquitous vending machines)

2) Greek whole-fat yoghurt (whole fat anything is better for you (no fractured proteins which make you crave other fats as your body will crave a complete protein) the skim-milk/1-2% is a joke

3) Agave (my kids like it in their tea, on toast, husband likes in coffee)

4) 3rd Street Chai (mix w/1/2 Rice Dream enriched rice milk) - am weaning off of coffee, although I like a nice latte' sometimes (I never step foot in a Starbucks - the Walmart of the industry)

5) Frozen blueberry waffles (Eggo) for a quick breakfast

6) Shelton's turkey sausage breakfast links

7) Wild Oats tangerine-orange Italian soda (we go through about 3 bottles a week)

8) Orange Recharge sports drink (in summer or when sick - great source of electrolytes - no Gatorade for us w/all that crap - the athletes just endorse it, they never drink it as it has too much sugar, high-fructose corn syrup, etc. in it)

9) Fresh seafood/fish

10) European butter (makes the best pie crusts, scones, bakery items)

Gina,

Do you ever eat normal, natural, earth-produced food vs. all that man-made garbage you eat, like diet pepsi among other unimaginable items? Can't imagine how unhealthy you and your family are. Check out www.mercola.com re: diet drinks, aspartame, splenda, etc. Have you had any MS like symptoms lately which are often associated w/the ingestion of artificial sweeteners such as aspartame? Hope you're not giving your kids that crap - it damages their neurological systems. You are what you eat, down to the cellular level. Get a life girl!
